TX-NR609 Monitor output will not connect to TV

I have connected my dvd player to the receiver using a hdmi cable. However my tv is older and does not support HDMI so I connected a cable from the v monitor output on the receiver to the video input on the TV. However I cannot get the video signal to show up on the TV. Any ideas on how to get this to work?
