PS3 and TX-NR515 Empty PS3 and TX-NR515

Post  plouie10 Wed Aug 08, 2012 11:31 am

Hi
When playing NHL12 on PS3 through HDMI, the amp shows PCM. The problem is I can barely hear the audio commentary. This wasn't the problem on my old Pioneer amp. I have to change the audio settings to 5 channel stereo in order to hear the commentary properly. Not the end of the world, but any recommendations?
Thanks
Phil

Which version PS3 are you using- slim or older version (fatboy)? Have you selected all audio formats in the SOUND SETTINGS menu for the PS3? Have you pressed the DISPLAY button on the receiver to indicate the current listening mode in use on the receiver? Have you toggled thru the listening modes available and selected a preferred SURR listening mode setting? If you are still experiencing the same issue(s), Please contact our Product Support Dept for further assistance with this specific issue via our phone number and hours of operation below. We would like to speak with you and work to troubleshoot and resolve your issue as prompt as possible.

Thank You;

PS3 and TX-NR515 Empty Re: PS3 and TX-NR515

Hi
I am using the older version (fat boy). I have cycled through the surround sound modes. I listened to all of them and all of them are weak on the commentary for NHL12. All channel stereo is the best. I have all the modes ticked off in the hdmi audio output of the PS3. It shows PCM on the amp and I am running Audyssey 2EQ with Dynamic Volume (light). This sounds absolutely great for either movies or TV. Like I said not the end of the world. I will try some more settings when I have time. I will test a blu-ray through the ps3. Perhaps it's just the way NHL12 commentary is done. I will post my results with the movie.
Thanks
Phil

Okay, got it figured out. I had to put the listening mode into Multichannel in order to accommodate PS3. Then Audyssey indicator would like up. The commentary was still a little light, so I adjusted the original Audyssey 2 settings which put the centre channel at -4db and adjusted it to +1. Everything is perfect now. The -4db is perfect for movies, but I only use the PS3 to play games so I can leave it at the proper settings for games.

Thanks

Glad to hear your issue has been resolved. For future reference; here is the full information regarding this issue with the PS3 (fatboy):

The older fat model Sony PS3 does not allow for an undecoded Bitstream signal via HDMI to pass to the receiver so the receiver can do the decoding and you see "DTS HD-MASTER AUDIO or DOLBY TRUE HD" displayed on the front of the receiver. The PS3 is doing all of the decoding so if you press the display button for the PS3 you will see it is doing the decoding. To see that the PS3 is doing the decoding press the select button on the remote for the PS3. The following settings are for the PS3 to output Dolby Digital, and all the other sound formats with an HDMI connection. If you are using optical only do step 1 and make sure in sound settings optical is selected and set the configuration to automatic. You must go to settings in the cross media bar (start up screen).

Go to the settings bar in on the PS3. Scroll over to settings and go to Video Settings next go to BD audio settings and make sure HDMI and Optical are set to bitstream. Go to Sound Settings then press the “x” button on the controller. Click on HDMI then click on manual settings. Make sure Dolby Digital, DTS, and AAC all have check boxes. Don’t worry about the linear PCM formats leave those alone. Go to the next menu by pressing right on the Directional Pad of the controller and press the “x” button to save the settings. These settings are for the PS3 to decode sound formats internally through Linear PCM (uncompressed audio however the receiver will not display True HD or DTS Master only multichannel since the PS3 is doing all the decoding) Go to Video settings press enter. Go to BD/DVD Audio output settings (HDMI) and make sure HDMI output is set to Linear PCM. Go to Sound Settings and make sure that HDMI is selected and set it to MANUAL. Make sure that ALL Linear PCM settings have a check mark as well as Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1 and AAC. Save your settings.

Go to BD DVD Settings and make sure HDMI output is set to Linear PCM. Go to Sound Settings and make sure that HDMI is selected and set it to MANUAL. Make sure that ALL Linear PCM settings have a check mark. Save your settings. If you have these settings and all linear PCM’s checked please note that you will only be able to get Multichannel and Direct as your listening mode even if the PS3 is set to Bitstream but the PS3 will decode Dolby Digital and DTS on its own. To see what format the PS3 is decoding press the select button on the controller. If you have these settings and all linear PCM’s checked please note that you will only be able to get Multichannel and Direct as your listening mode even if the PS3 is set to Bitstream but the PS3 will decode Dolby Digital and DTS on its own PLEASE NOTE THAT WHEN THE PS3 IS SET TO LINEAR PCM IT CAN ONLY DECODE DTS MASTER IN 5.1 EVEN THOUGH THEY SAY IT CAN DO 7.1.
