iPod Selection of Options when connected via USB on TX-NR609 Receiver

Everything goes according to the instructions on p. 24 of the users' manual of the TX-NR609 up to the point where the menu of the iPod (Playlists, Artists, Albums, etc.) comes on the screen of my TV. I am supposed to be able to use the up and down arrows on the remote to move to select the option I want to use to select the music I want and then play music and I cannot get the cursor to move up and down the screen to select the option I want. Any ideas?

When using the remote do you push the RECEIVER button and then the USB button before trying to control the iPod?
