Firmware updates and apple

My TX 809 model is scheduled for delivery tomorrow. I'm very wary of doing a firmware upgrade as I've read a multitude of posts where this action has failed.

I understand that you can't use Ethernet connections directly to the receiver if you use an Apple computer.

Would it be problematic to download the firmware uploads to an Apple, then transferring the information to the receiver via a USB 2.0 flash drive?

And, finally, how necessary is it to update the firmware? I'm not planning on using the WiFi capabilities. What I want is a solid receiver that can connect things together via hdmi. Let's say I check the firmware currently on the receiver and there have been a couple of updates since, but they deal mainly with WiFi functions, can I skip the process?

You may use your MAC to download the files to a flash drive as you will not be changing anything. Just make sure the files are unzipped when putting them on the flash drive.
Unfortunately once the download is started there is no way to skip any part of it.
