Onkyo TX-NR616 - Firmware 1130-9107-0300 - 2012.07.24
Hello.
I've just downloaded the firmware file, and when I unzip it, I have three files dated 14/06/2012, and in another folder named AVR000D_Release, another three files dated 20/07/2012
According with the video "ONKYO Firmware update via USB on 2012 Network Receivers" published on YouTube, I only need three files ...
Why are six files on the zip?
Should I update first the files with date 14/06/2012 and when it finish, the dated on 20/07/2012 or should I only use the files dated on 20/07/2012 and ignore the first ones?
Thanks!

Bump to above posters question.
Also, what is the official way to do an update to firmware:
1) Wired Ethernet connection
or
2) USB stick

BUMP
12 hours later : BUMP please for I suspect many are waiting for an Official answer to this important question for the instructions posted on your website do NOT address the 6 files in the zip file... that is, transfer all 6 or what exactly?
Secondly: the USB thumb drive : FAT or NTFS format?

Patience lost
Sorry, but those of us, who paid good money for your product have been hearing "sorry, we are working on this firmware issue where we have crippled YOUR receiver so much to keep the MPAA happy" for months now.
Our patience has been lost a month or two ago.
I suspect I speak for many LOYAL onkyo fans from 10-15 years ago when I say *IF* we could return this for our money back, we would.
I dumbly bought four of these, one for myself, and three for family members (NR616)
Since I am the 'friends and family' tech support person, guess who gets phone calls at 10pm when they want to play a DVD and cannot without first unplugging the unit. Guess who gets a phone call at 8am when the young child wants to watch her Nemo DVD and cannot.
WHEN it works, it sounds excellent and is good value for the money but only WHEN it works.

Re: Onkyo TX-NR616 - Firmware 1130-9107-0300 - 2012.07.24
Onkyo,
The update instructions are confusing (as usual). What is the difference between "Latest Firmware Version: xxxx-xxxx-xxxx" and "Once these updates are completed, the receivers F/W version will be xxxx-xxxx-xxxx"? These are two different numbers. I have an NR515 and after I updated the firmware (dated 7/4/2012) on my receiver (via USB), the firmware on my unit was 1100-6103-0300 (Latest Firmware Version specified in instructions). However the instructions for that update said that "Once these updates are completed, the receivers F/W version will be 1110-810*-0300". I don't get it.
The update instructions for this update (dated 7/24/2012) says "Latest Firmware Version: 1130-9107-0300" and "Once the updates are completed, the receivers F/W version will be 1110-8106-0300". Which firmware version will my receiver end up with after the update???? Also, the update instructions for the 7/24/2012 update state "If the current F/W version of your receiver IS listed above........." and "If the current F/W version of your recever IS NOT listied above...........". I don't see any listing of F/W versions anywhere in the instructions.
Will you please clarify this for me?

Successful /Update via the net
Tonite I figured I would give it a shot. I updated via a wired ethernet connection to the Latest Firmware Version: 1130-9107-0300.
All I can say is that it didn't break anything. It took 20 minutes and two downloads. The first download does the VM. The second does the other two memory areas ARM and something else.
Home Media found my 3 pcs but no files. I assume it is looking for music files because the icon to launch it has a music note in it. DNLA works fine. It sees the PC's and the music files just fine. I don't know what the difference is.
The new Android App works fine.
The 7/24 /2012 update will address the following:
1. Supports Onkyo Remote2 for iOS version: 1.30 or later;
-Adds support for high end models & audio streaming from iOS device
2. Supports Onkyo Remote for Android version: 1.30 or later;
-Adds support for high end models
*it is also necessary to update the App
3. Improves operation of "Power on" of remote control
4. Adds support of Home Media Function (Samba Server); Playing music files like Apple Lossless via
network/USB becomes possible;
Additional Audio file format
■Apple Lossless (.m4a/.mp4/.M4A/.MP4)
Sampling rates of 8 kHz, 11.025 kHz, 12 kHz, 16 kHz, 22.05 kHz, 24 kHz, 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 64 kHz,
88.2 kHz and 96 kHz are supported. Quantization bit: 16 bit, 24 bit
■DSD (.dsf or .DSF)
The sampling rate of 2.8224 MHz is supported.
■Dolby True HD (.vr/.mlp/.VR/.MLP)
Sampling rates of 48 kHz, 64 kHz, 88.2 kHz, 96 kHz, 176.4 kHz and 192 kHz are supported.
Notice:
Limitation of when using UWF-1
1. Only 64 kHz and less sampling rate is supported; 2. Dolby TrueHD and DSD is not supported when using
Home Media Function; 3. Using at rear USB port is not supported when using Home Media Function;

Re: Onkyo TX-NR616 - Firmware 1130-9107-0300 - 2012.07.24
Hi Onkyo,
No, my question was not fully answered. Can you tell me why, on page 3 of the update instructions, it states:"Once these updates are completed, the receivers F/W version will be 1110-8106-0300"? If the firmware version on the receiver will be 1130-9107-0300 why do they even mention the number on page 3? What am I missing here?

I believe this is referring to the update on 6/26 as noted near the bottom of page 2.
"The 6/26 /12 update will address the following:
1. Corrects problem of HDMI video output no longer working while the “Network Standby” setting is enabled
*See Important Notice for further details
2. Adds UBT-1 support (only if 6/15 FW update wasn’t done)
*IMPORTANT NOTICE
1. If the current F/W version of your receiver IS listed above, this update will occur in 2 parts.
a. The 1st part of the update WILL CLEAR the settings and restore the unit to factory default
setting. Initial set-up must be performed again including Network setting and Audyssey calibration.
b. Once the network settings are re-established, the 2nd portion of the update will occur. Settings
WILL NOT be cleared as a result of this 2nd portion.
c. It is recommended to proceed with these FW update via USB Firmware Update for the TX-NR515, TX-NR616, HT-RC460
& HT-R791 (HT-S7500)
2. If the current F/W version of your receiver IS NOT listed above, only the later F/W update will be
processed. Settings WILL NOT be cleared as a result of this portion.

copy the release file as well
I seem to have managed to install the latest upgrade from a USB with the unzipped release file and the usual three update files. I deleted the three June files from the USB which may be the previous update which had already been installed. Loaded in less than 30 mins. Could not get the online version to work but that may be a server problem (just a guess!) The overseas sites also seemed down last night. I had assumed that only three files would be needed for a few hours but that's documentation for you!
Be interesting to see if the variable lip sync and the other "features" become less irritating. Don't think I will be able to test the list of new features Onkyo list for the upgrade but perhaps it will make next month's update easier? I take it there will be one.

Back to wordless wonders.
Thought it might help to report on the situation after the latest fix.
The only major effect I have noticed is the return of the most annoying Onkyo problem before the series of fixes. Switching back from a Sony pvr routed through the Onkyo to the Sony TV's tuner sometimes loses the sound. Switching the amp off and on restores the sound after about twenty seconds.
Lip sync may be a bit better. Output from the subwoofer seems more stable.
Occasional transient dropping of sound when using a Sagemcom pvr through the Onkyo to the Sony TV may be a Sagemcom fault.
Sagemcom rushed out their box before the World Cup and we know the joy of buying video gear just before major sports events. Guess I never learn!
I remember when car manufactures decided to test cars BEFORE they left the factory. Perhaps a lesson for firms who frequently introduce new models?

June & July Firmware updates
I did my updates via wireless wifi/UWF-1. It did the first one right after I set up the network (06/12) and took about an hour to complete. It did the 2nd one (07-12) the next night and tooks less than 30 minutes totally.
