I want to use PIP on my Sony TV and play cable (from 609 HDMI) and internal TV tuner simultaneously, with either selected picture's sound through the 609. Since the audio switching for PIP occurs within the TV, I must use the optical audio out from the TV to feed audio to the 609. I've connected the TV digital out to the TV/CD input using optical 2. My cable box is connected to CBL/SAT via HDMI and the 609 HDMI output is fed to the TV. HDMI Through is On. Unfortunately, the HDMI out on the 609 only seems to pass video to the TV, not any audio. This is true whether the 609 is set to CBL/SAT or TV/CD - I get the video into the TV, but no audio reaches the TV from the 609 HDMI output. The 609 will only pass audio on HDMI when it is in standby mode (but this is no good since I can't then listen to the TV/CD input). According to the manual, pg 57, if HDMI Through is set, audio should always be passed on to the TV, whether the 609 is powered on or in standby.
I've updated to the latest firmware level and HDMI Through is still not passing audio when the 609 is powered on.
Please let me know if there is something else to be set, or if the 609 does not do what is stated in the manual. Thanks.

The blog states "From there go into power control and make sure that is also set to ON or ENABLED. Then you will make sure that the TV control is set to OFF". I don't find a power control or TV control setting in the 609 menu. Please clarify this.

Also, a basic question: should audio be passed through on HDMI (if HDMI Through is On) when the 609 is powered on? The manual says Yes, but that doesn't appear to be working.

You are correct the manual does state that and I apologies that part of the blog post does not apply to the 609. Please make sure that the RIHD is set to ON. Also when the unit is in standby mode is the pass through indicator light on?

Yes, in standby mode the HDMI Through indicator is ON. When powered on, though, it is OFF.

FYI - I hooked up a separate Yamaha AV receiver to the optical out of the TV. I fed the 690 HDMI into the TV. With the 690 turned off, everything worked fine - video and audio both went through the 690 and sound came out the TV output to the Yamaha receiver. But, as soon as I turn on the 690, the audio is cut off and nothing comes out the TV output.

Before doing the factory reset, which will change all my settings, I'd like assurance that the design of the 690 should actually pass thru HDMI audio when it is powered on, as stated in the manual. Can you confirm that for me?

I apologies that the unit is not working properly. This is what it states in the manual about the through featrue: "When enabling the HDMI Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is on or in standby, both audio and video streams from an HDMI input will be output to the TV or other components via HDMI connection." Please perform the reset, if that does not work we will look into assisting you in another way. Thank you!

Factory reset had no effect. Same symptoms as before: audio does not pass thru when 609 is powered on. When powered off, audio passes through just fine.

Separate note: If it were working correctly, would the HDMI Through light be on all the time (whether unit powered on or off)?

the hdmi boards on these recivers are bad my failed in less than 4 mos. had to have it repaired works for awhile then have to reboot it to work like it should just waiting for this one to fail.

TX-NR609 HDMI Through audio issue Empty customer service

i had called cusomer service when i first had this problem did it for 3 day straight got tired of being on hold for better than 1 hour or better,called tech service on hold there for 45mins tech did the reboot thing ,then finally told me to take the reciver the repair shop. now it doing the same thing won't play sound thru have to have the reciver on to hear the sound, next it will quit letting the video thru. i guess it will back for another repair.by the way this is the third onkyo reciver i have had over the years. maybe you should replace all these defective unit.
