TX-NR809 Firmware Update Problems and Question
I just received a new TX-NR809 and ran into a problem updating the firmware. It came with version 1091-0977-0210-8105. However, the TX-NR809 video processor did not appear to be working properly in all but the Direct mode. When I selected Through or any of the Custom settings, the shadow detail was squashed into black on my two main sources: a DirecTV HR21 DVR and my Oppo BD-83 BluRay player. I had to make big changes in the NR809 Custom Brightness and Contrast to get the video to look anywhere near normal.
I tried twice to update the firmware via my LAN connection that worked fine on a TX-NR709. Things would start downloading then halt with an Error 5-64 displayed. After trying it again with the same results I found a post on the AVS forum thread for the TX-NR809. The fix was to download the firmware to a USB stick and to disconnect all the input cables from the back.
Then I checked the Onyko software downloads area and found the latest on there was 1091-0977-0210-9105, dated 10/31/11. Only one number change from 8105 to 9105. I downloaded it to a 500 MB USB memory stick, disconnected the HDMI input cables and it did the update just fine. However, when I checked the firmware update utility to see if it was the latest version, it downloaded and installed version 1111-1077-0211-1105. That does not even appear on the Onyko download site! After installing the update the video differences seemed to be greatly reduced.
Does anyone know anything more about this update?

Re: TX-NR809 Firmware Update Problems and Question
Hi w6fxj,
Apologies for your circumstance, here is what I'd like for you to try:
1) Disconnect the receiver from the power also make sure that no HDMI cables are connected and wait for at least 5 minutes.
2) Plug the unit back in and do a reset of the receiver. To do the reset you need to turn the receiver on, then on the front panel of the receiver press and hold the "VCR/DVR" button while doing that press the "STANDBY/ON" button. You will see the word "Clear" in the display screen and the receiver will go into standby mode. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR AUDIO & VIDEO ASSIGNMENTS ON THE RECEIVER PLUS YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR SPEAKER CONFIGURATIONS, SPEAKER DISTANCE AND ALL LEVEL CALIBRATION SETTINGS. YOU WILL ALSO LOSE ANY PROGRAMMED RADIO STATIONS IN MEMORY.
3) Turn on the receiver and try the USB update again and see if this works for you.

I already have the 1111-1077-0211-1105 firmware loaded and it seems to have corrected the original problems. My question is what issues did the firmware correct? It still is NOT listed on the Onyko Software Downloads page: http://www.onkyousa.com/download/software.cfm

Re: TX-NR809 Firmware Update Problems and Question
Hi w6fxj,
Apologies, for that it seems to have been a misprint on our part. There are 2 updates out there and I was wondering which one you down loaded. The following was the latest:
TX-NR709/TX-NR809/HT-RC370 (12/20/2011)
I wanted to make sure you had this one instead of the one from 10/31/2011
By the way if you go to our website at www.onkyousa.com under support --> down loads --> firmware updates and when you select the update instructions/download it will tell you what the update does. The following is what the the latest update does:
The 12/20/2011 update addresses the following:
1. Improves noise during playback of DTS-HD Master Audio with particular Blu-ray disc
2. Corrects operation of speaker distance calculation in Audyssey 2EQ

Re: TX-NR809 Firmware Update Problems and Question
There are actually three TX-NR809 firmware updates on the web! I skipped the top one because I did not read beyond the TX-NR709! Is there any reason to include old updates in the list of current updates? Doesn't each firmware update include all earlier changes? If so the older updates should not be in the current update list. Maybe elsewhere to reduce the confusion. In any case it looks like 1111-1077-0211-1105 is the latest, so my question is answered.

Hi w6fxj,
Sorry for the confusion. I will have someone take a look at the website for you.
