TX-NR717 Is it the receiver or the speakers
I have a new receiver that I ordered from Amazon last week. I cannot calibrate the the front l/r speakers. I get an onscreen message that says "speakers not detected error". I have a 5.1 connection and the test sound comes out of all the correct speakers during calibration. This receiver is way more powerful than the Sony it replaced, but I have to turn it way up to hear sound- up to 55-59. That doesn't seem right. i haven't even tried some of the other features like internet.

Make absolutely sure you have connected your front left and right speakers to the designated FRONT RIGHT and FRONT LEFT binding posts. It is very easy to connect them to "Front Height" or "Front Width" posts which would give you sound from those speakers but not be shown in the Audessey calibration screen.
The volume setting may well be slightly lower when the speakers are properly selected. If, on the other hand, you do have the speakers confirmed to be on the correct binding postsby all means follow the Mods advice and ask for more help from their techs.

Might be the microphone
Thanks for the replies. I called product support and was told it may be the calibration mike. Since my first post I have tried other features. I connected it to the internet and it updated. Listened to my iPhone music. I watched "Avatar" with THX on. Sounded good.
