HT-S6300 Surround Speakers Play Instead of Rear Surround for 5.1

Just like the title says, whenever the audio stream is 5.1 the sound for the rear speakers come out of the side speakers for my 7.1 setup. Whenever the audio stream is 7.1 things work as they should. Why is this and how can I configure it so the rear speakers are used and not the side speakers for 5.1?

That is simply because a 5.1 surround sound configuration consists of the following speakers in use:
- FRONT L + R
- CENTER
- SURR L + R

SURR BACK speakers are NOT in use during a 5.1 playback. The SURR BACK channels are in use when using a 7.1 surround sound configuration. So there is no issues with the surround sound broadcasting of your receiver. By changing the listening mode; you should be able to select a mode that'll replicate surround sound playback thru a 7.1 speaker set-up. Press the DISPLAY button on the receiver repeatedly to indicate the incoming audio format and press again to depict the audio output format.
