We have a new TX-NR515 we just installed for a customer. Out is to the TV via HDMI, It has a DirecTV box installed connected via HDMI. Then it has a DVD/VCR combo that is hooked up to Component 1 and also Composite on the DVD port. We get Audio but no Video. I have even called Tech support today but they were no help as they made sure we had all the settings correctly.

Any ideas? I have been a long supporter of Onkyo receviers from the early 600's and this is just not acceptable to sell.

We have seen the other threads on this but it will not work for us as the DVD/VCR menu doesn't give us an option for setting the output to 480i. And yes before it gets asked we have tried just the Composite and Component.

Please read the above post again. I have tried and read the post you said, we don't have the option in this particular receiver to set the output to 480i. All of the older 605-609's we never had this issue.

Are you saying this is the only way for it to work?

Hi Dositmat,

Unfortunately we have no control over product development. This is the only way you can accomplish what you are trying to do.

Sorry, but that's simply silly.

Set a 1080 Component source to output 480 so it can then be up-converted?? That's a horrible solution. Component video supports 1080. Why on earth is it seen as desirable to downscale 1080 just to upscale it to 1080 again??? -- degrade the video so it can be degraded again???? It should pass through.

The only conclusion is this is a software flaw in the NR515 receiver. That or a very specific limitation implemented intentionally where a component connection is used.

If older (CHEAPER) Onkyo receivers can input 1080 component, then output 1080... there's no valid reason why the NR515 shouldn't do the same.

Hi NotInUse,

Unfortunately that is the way is currently designed.

Hello,

Rather than start a new topic, I figured I'd just latch onto this one, since it's pretty close to what I'm asking.

I just got my new NR-TX515 and spend part of the evening hooking everything up.

I have a composite device (red, white, yellow cable) that I have hooked to the game input. Will this upconvert through HDMI to the TV? Because currently it is not.

I have both the HDMI and component for Game set to ---- and I get nothing at all.
Everything I'd ever read about this series of receivers said "it can take all your analog stuff and upconvert it to 1080p!" which I'm now finding out is not true. Any help? Sad

Yes- it will upconvert from COMPOSITE or COMPONENT to HDMI from this receiver- but the input source device must be set to output at 480i so the receiver can successfully upconvert the signal to the maximum resolution accepted by your TV/ projector. For instance; your Wii/ xBox 360/ PS3 console will need to be reconfigured for the video output to be set to 480i. Using 480p, 720p, or 1080i will result in NO PICTURE. This would be the same with the TX-NR 616 as well. The higher models (TX-NR 717 and above) do NOT require this reconfiguration.

If you are still experiencing the same issue(s), Please contact our Product Support Dept for further assistance with this specific issue via our phone number and hours of operation (Monday- Sunday 24 hours a day (800) 229-1687; option #3 PRODUCT SUPPORT). We would like to speak with you and work to troubleshoot and resolve your issue as prompt as possible.

Hello Admin-person.

The thing I'm trying to hook up is literally an old Nintendo. Like, from 1987. It has composite cables (red white yellow). Is it going to be possible to upconvert this to HDMI output?

I am going to refer you to the following weblink for a better explanation of the video signal/ resolution issue of legacy consoles such as Nintendo, Sega, Sega Saturn, etc: http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/video-capture/3574-resolution-nintendo-nes.html. It will explain that Nintendo will output in 240p and the resolution will need to be doubled to 480 interlaced video resolution.

Here's an excerpt: Older video game console and home computers generated a nonstandard NTSC or PAL signal which placed both fields on top of each other. This is equivalent to 240p and 288p respectively. Conversely, the FCC forbade TV stations from broadcasting in this format.

With the introduction of 16-bit game consoles, 480i was supported for the first time, but rarely used due to limited memory and processing power. Thus, 240p remained the primary format on all fifth generation consoles (Sega Saturn, PlayStation and Nintendo 64) With the advent of sixth generation consoles and the launch of the Dreamcast, 480i use become more common, and 240p usage declined.

More recent game systems tend to use only properly interlaced NTSC or PAL in addition to higher resolution modes, except when running games designed for older, compatible systems in their native modes. The PlayStation 2 generates 240p/288p if a PlayStation game calls for this mode, as do many Virtual Console emulated games on Wii. Nintendo's official software development kit documentation refers to 240p as 'non-interlaced mode' or 'double-strike'.

Okay so I need to upconvert the 240p signal to 480i, which the receiver will then upconvert to 1080p or whatever to put out through HDMI. Did I get that right?

If so, two questions (my Googling abilities did not turn up any answers):

1) Is there a device that does this? (Upconverts from 240p to 480i)

2) Is it even worth it, or will it introduce so much video lag that everything will be unplayable?

Correct. You will need to upconvert the 240p signal to 480i, which the receiver will then upconvert to 1080p or whatever to put out through HDMI. In regards to the other questions: you may want to review this weblink for further information- as it seems to steer more in the direction you are referring to. You can also reply to see if other users have successfully accomplished this measure. Go to the following weblink: http://www.avsforum.com/t/1300843/upconvert-nes-and-snes-to-plasma and here is an excerpt from this forum's webpage: I understand that you want something simple. But also the NES and SNES are very different in nature. While the NES only offers composite video without expensive modding, the SNES has got a RGBs output if you use a a RGB Scart cable (available on eBay from one $). That's why you're looking for a Scart to HDMI converter that supports both composite and RGBs input.

Have a look at this particular model:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...253D&viewitem=

It's confirmed to work with 240p sources, has 720p and 1080p output and does support the two input signals you need.

For your SNES you need this cable then:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...Q1IXUoJm0%253D

(both the european GameCube systems and the american SNES systems have the same RGBs output).

And for your NES you need this adapter:

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Normally my Google skills are better than this, but you've been really showing me up. Haha.

Thanks again. I'll keep looking.

(Just for the sake of the thread, I did just successfully take a Wii at 480i component and have it upconvert to HDMI with sound and no visible lag. So, it does work!)
