TX-NR717 video on Samsung 8000 has intermittent 'stutter' or skip/'hiccup' Empty TX-NR717 video on Samsung 8000 has intermittent 'stutter' or skip/'hiccup'

Upon connecting the receiver (HDMI from cable box to receiver to TV) - noticed intermittent 'stutter' or glitch in the video signal - didn't time it but is at least once a minute or so. For instance, two people talking their image would stutter/skip/hiccup for just a second or so. Not major but noticable by all viewers.

The same problem was visible when viewing Blue Ray. Neither cable HD TV image or Blue Ray had this problem before the receiver was introduced.

Additional issue with the Blue Ray was - when watching i.e. Lord of the Rings (which case lists as having dts-HD audio) - there was a major audio/video sync issue - with video to speaking out by a long shot. I did not try to manually adjust this (as i am aware you can).

I had seen a slight audio / video out of sync on cable on a few channels but that seemed to correct.

So - 2 issues: 1) the stutter/hiccup in video 2) audio-video sync on Blue Ray primarily

Any input is appreciated.

Hi RoonieTwo,

I have those issues with my new TX-NR717 until I did this:

I have found and with helping others on this board with success. Unplug the unit from the power supply for exactly 5 minutes. This is considered a "soft boot"; you will NOT lose any of your settings. After you have it unplugged for the 5 minutes, plug it back in and see what happens. After it is plugged back give it a min or so, and then turn the receiver on and hopefully this will help.

I have the TX-NR717, had a few issues that for the life of me could not figure out after a firmware update. Found and did this. My TX-NR717 has been working like a champ ever since .

I will always do this after a major update. It makes sense if you think about it. PC's, Cells, Tablets all reboot after an update.

Hope this helps. ENJOY!

Post here and let all know if this works.

I'm having the exact same issue with my 717...I'm going to try unplugging it for 5 minutes tomorrow and I'll post if it fixes it or not

TX-NR717 video on Samsung 8000 has intermittent 'stutter' or skip/'hiccup' Empty tried the reboot

Post  RoonieTwo Mon Dec 03, 2012 7:19 pm

Thanks @FlyByNgt for the tip. I did try the unplug reboot - and it did not seem to correct the periodic judder - however one benefit is that it seems to have improved the picture quality the receiver is sending to the TV from both the HD Cable and Blue Ray.

Blue Ray still has the audio/video sync issue with certain dts-HD movies (i.e. like the Lord of the Rings as tried). I did go-in and manually adjust the Audio Sync - but don't believe one should have to do that (alas, perhaps I'm naive).

So - at least I have a better resolution picture coming through now.

I did some reading on the Samsung TV and it has an option to adjust the Motion Plus -- custom adjust of 'Judder' and 'Blur'. I have not tried this yet as need to do more reading online about this.

Still hopeful that a resolution can be found for these issues.

What resolution is your HDMI set to output? I changed mine to "Direct' for the setting of the input, and "Through" for the Monitor Out setting. In theory, this should just pass the same HDMI video on the the TV. Since I have an older PS3, I can't test outputting DTS-HD, as the PS3 converts everything to PCM first.

Also, is your Bluray player outputting 1080p/24? If so, is your receiver attempting to convert this to 1080p/60, or vice versa?

TX-NR717 video on Samsung 8000 has intermittent 'stutter' or skip/'hiccup' Empty Have found a solution to my problems

Post  RoonieTwo Wed Dec 05, 2012 11:27 pm

Tried just about everything suggested (thanks very much for the input here). Having tried that - here is what I did - with success I'm glad to say (although not everyone may agree this is an ideal solution - but it achieved the outcome I was looking for):

- unplugged all HDMI's to the receiver (from HD Cable Box; Blue Ray; Apple TV)
- unplugged HDMI from receiver to TV
- plugged in all HDMI's directly to TV (HD Cable Box; Blue Ray; Apple TV) [thankfully it had enough HDMI inputs]
- ran Optical Audio Cable from TV to Optical-In-2 on receiver

And with that - my problems were solved.
- Perfect picture clarity and no more 'judder' /studder or whatever you want to call it (direct HD Cable HDMI into TV);
- Audio just as clear via Optical Audio as when it was running through HDMI into the receiver;

and a bonus - since my Blue Ray player is a Samsung (3D) - and since now directly HDMI'd to TV, was able to enable Samsung's BD-Wise function and that just popped the HD picture from Blue Ray to TV (it really did make a positive diff)

It does seem strange having that long row of 'empty' HDMI inputs on the back of the receiver -- but it's a live-and-learn scenario here. Ideal no. Does it work - yes.

Not much spare time to worry about it now, beyond the fact that the above set-up is working!

TX-NR717 video on Samsung 8000 has intermittent 'stutter' or skip/'hiccup' Empty Re: TX-NR717 video on Samsung 8000 has intermittent 'stutter' or skip/'hiccup'

I am having the same issue with the video stuttering or skipping. I have tried unplugging it for 5 minutes and I have tried setting the HDMI to thru instead of auto, neither has fixed the issue. I have a Panasonic TC-P65GT50 Plasma TV, a Panasonic DMP-BDT320 BluRay, and an XBOX 360. Before I got the TX-NR717, I had everything hooked up to the TV via HDMI cables. After I got the TX-NR717 I hooked all the HDMI's to it and just ran one HDMI out to the TV. I had no stutter issues before adding the TX-NR717 into the mix. I figure I can fix the issue by running all the HDMI's to the TV and coming out of it with digital optical to the TX-NR717, but I'd rather not do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

So far I haven't had any issues with mine. I have the main Monitor out set to "Through" and each input's video set to "Direct". I'm going from a Fat PS3, an Xbox 360 slim, and a PC's GTX 570 graphics card. I haven't tried anything that bitstreams Dolby Truehd or DTS-HD, but 7.1 channel PCM has been fine, as well as stereo, and standard DTS/DD. I'll be getting a standalone BD player soon, and will definitely be here if I have any issues.

I would not suggest settling for optical cables if possible. Optical cables can only carry 2 channels of uncompressed sound (stereo), or standard DTS and Dolby Digital. You'd be missing out on the lossless audio offered by Blu-Ray, or anything else that offers 5.1 or higher PCM, DTS-HD, or Dolby TrueHD, and only be using the lossy formats.

I guess support for these formats was the main reason I upgraded to this receiver, as my last one could only do those supported over optical.

Also, have you tried Pure Audio mode? It is supposed to disable all video processing, and is then basically an hdmi switchbox and only processes the audio. Not sure if you can enable it via remote but there is a button on the receiver. Can only output from hdmi sources as it cant process rca/component in this mode.
