How can I know for certain my subwoofer is working properly?

I have the TR-NX609 home theater system with the SKW-780 subwoofer.

I don't really know a lot about audio and speaker setups and what not - I don't have any idea what my subwoofer should sound like.

I'm posting here because my subwoofer seems extremely quiet. I have the little output knob set halfways between max and min.

I played some subwoofer test tones from YouTube and I can just barely hear anything from it. It really wobbles on that cone on the bottom though.

What am I listening for? When I listen to level calibration it just kind of sounds like wind blowing.

When I tried watching the tv show Dexter, during the intro, my subwoofer makes noise like crazy off and on. Like it's freakin thundering. I only had it as a rental so I can't say at what exact points, but that sure didn't sound right.

I wish I just.. knew if it's right or not..

I have ran the auto speaker setup. I had some family over this weekend and they claim the subwoofer is working properly so I guess that's that.
