Receiver Upscaling Nintendo Wii Empty Receiver Upscaling Nintendo Wii

Hello all,

For some reason my Nintendo Wii is being upscaled to 1080p with my Onkyo TX-NR515 receiver and subsequently cutting off the edges. There is a picture at the bottom of the post.

First off I should mention that I’m using the Wii2HDMI adapter (http://www.neoya.com/shop/wii2hdmi/). Note that it does not upscale, only passes signal through as a component cable would (480p). If you have a Wii and you want a full HDMI setup, I highly recommend these.

Second, if I plug the HDMI cable directly into my Samsung 60” LED TV it displays just fine (in native 480p).

Lastly, just for reference I recently upgraded to the TX-NR515, replacing a TX-SR508, and I never had this problem with that receiver.

As for the setup of my TX-NR515 receiver, I had the
1. Input/Output Assign ->
1. Monitor Out ->
Resolution set to Auto
I then tried changing it to Through and the TV would now say it’s displaying in 480p, but I still have the cut off edges.
I then tried changing it to 480p and again the TV would now say it’s displaying in 480p, but I still have the cut off edges (I left it in this resolution since it's what it should be showing anyways)

I then went to
4. Source Setup ->
5. Picture Adjust ->
Wide Mode set to Auto
I then tried changing it to 4:3 and the cut off edges were still present, though the TV said it was displaying 480p.
I then tried changing it to Zoom and Wide Zoom and it was clearly oversized in both settings.
I then tried changing it to Full and it looked ok.

Now while this combination of setting the Resolution to 480p and Wide Mode to Full seemed to have fixed the issue (though it's more of forcing it), I can’t help but wonder why when everything was set to Auto it would upscale it to 1080p and cut off the edges, yet when plugging directly into my TV it would display just fine.

Just for peace of mind I tried swapping out the Wii2HDMI adapter, HDMI cable and a different HDMI port on the receiver (AUX). All yielded the same result.

Your advice is appreciated.

The TX-NR 515 and TX-NR 616 receivers require an incoming video signal of 480i when using RCA COMPOSITE or COMPONENT video cable connections into the receiver for upscaling and HDMI output to your TV. Since your setup resembles a COMPONENT video connection and you are going into the receiver as 480p, you will need to downscale the incoming video resolution to 480i. Go into the Wii settings and under the submenu "SCREEN", you will see two options HDMI (480p) and SDTV (480i). Select the SDTV option so the Wii will now output the video resolution to 480i and you will then gain the output upscaling resolution of the maximum resolution allowed by the TV (1080i or 1080p).

Thank you for the reply, but I'm not trying to upscale it. I want it at it's native 480p, wide screen resolution.

Yes; but if you are using an HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV; it will not broadast any video signal via 480p, 720p, or 1080i/ 1080p unless the source device has been reconfigured to output at 480i video resolution. If you have the source device set to 480p, the receiver will NOT pass the video signal or even upconvert. The source device MUST be scaled down to 480i if you are going out from the receiver via HDMI. Once this is done; you can get a video signal from this connection out to the receiver at the presetted video output resolution configured on the receiver (THRU, 720p, 1080p, etc.). For better clarification of this, review the video resolution chart found on page 87 of the manual.

So I sort of get it, but I don't understand why the receiver wouldn't pass the signal through as 480p if I set it to "Through" mode (in Resolution). Seems like that mode should just "pass it through" as it's being given.

I've done some rearranging since my last post. I have moved the Wii to HDMI 5 (TV/CD) and my Wii U to HDMI 3 (GAME).

Since the Wii U is native 1080p, it is working fine and since HDMI 5 (TV/CD) doesn't upscale the Wii is working fine as well, however I think I am limiting myself with the audio. The Wii will output Dolby Prologic II, but if I'm reading the manual right, the TV/CD option won't output anything other then 2.0 audio? The only option I can find is All Channel Stereo 5.1, but that's just the same channel out of all the speakers. Is there any way to get Dolby Prologic II with this setup or do I need to move it around?

Also for your information the full HDMI setup is as follows:

HDMI 1 (BD/DVD) -> Blu-ray Player
HDMI 2 (CBL/SAT) -> Cable Box
HDMI 3 (GAME) -> Wii U
HDMI 4 (PC) -> Desktop PC
HDMI 5 (TV/CD) -> Wii
