Onkyo 717 - remote not working

Hi, I've just bought an Onkyo 717 2 days ago. At first the remote was working, but yesterday I connected all the wires and when I switched on the receiver the remote did not do anything. I tried to reset the receiver (standby+cbl/sat), the remote (receiver+home), the id remote (receiver+q setup), but it just doesn't work. I can't believe I have a problem with it when I have never used it.
Is there anything else I can/must try?
I noticed that if I press "source" on the remote, the little red light doesn't show up, while it works for every other button on the remote.
How can I understand if it is a remote or receiver problem??

Looks like the remote is working, but you have to stay very very near to the receiver. If I stay just in front, even at less than 0.5 meter, it doesn't work. I have to stay above or a little aside.
