tx-nr717 firmware

Are the firmware updates necessary on the 717? The reason I ask is because I share my neighbors internet connection with him so I cannot hardline an Ethernet cord, I will only be able to use WiFi on the receiver. My receiver is set to arrive next week is why I am asking.

I would advise you to update the firmware version of this receiver IF you recognize any video or audio issues hampering your receiver. You can download the F/W update and drag and drop the extracted files onto a FAT32 USB flash drive. You can also control and stream music from an iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad/Android over a local network. Would need a wireless router, but it doesn't have to be connected to the internet to do this. I believe that some of the support for this (such as streaming your iTunes music wirelessly) was added in more recent Firmware updates. You also wouldn't need the wireless adapter as long as you can run a wire to the router from the receiver, and just use the wireless for the mobile device. While perhaps not necessary, I haven't heard of anything that was worse with the current firmware, only better. As mentioned, you can do it via USB, no need for an internet connection at home.
