tx-nr515 remote - how to use the "custom" mode button

What is the 'custom' mode button on the tx-nr515 remote (above 'receiver' and TV')?
It's not mentioned in the manual as far as I can see. Given that the receiver has 7 rear HDMI inputs I foolishly thought I could access them all easily from the remote - nope, you can get one-click access to just 4. So I am hoping there is some way to program this button to allow switching and control of at least one more HDMI source.

As per pages 11 and 71 of the owner's manual; the "CUSTOM" remote mode button is to designate a specifc device (i.e. BD player, TV, Projector, Apple TV, etc). Using this MODE button will only provide basic functionality for your device and not provide detailed operation of your device.
