Help with new "Home Media" option on "Net" for 616 (firmware 1130-9107-0300)
When I turned my 616 on today I was told that a firmware update was available, which I allowed. It installed with no apparent problems. When I selected "Net", I noticed that there was an additional option added after Rhapsody, called "Home Media". I was hoping that what I would find is a streaming feature where not only music, but video and photos could be streamed from my home computer. I ran it, and when it started moving down the folders of my computer, I was very happy. Once I entered a folder where pictures were located, it just said "No items". No matter where I went, I got this "No Items" message. Can someone out there 1) tell me just what this new "Home Media" is supposed to do and 2) is there an alternative way for me to stream photos and video via 616 from my computer to my HDTV? Thank you. BTW: So far, I'm very pleased with the 616 once I got used to its features. I echo what others have already suggested, that Onkyo add iHeart radio as another feature.

Home Media
I am too chicken to install the 7/24 update yet (NR616) but I would love to know more "NET \ Home Media" and whether or not it will be DLNA to show Photo/Video direct thru the Onkyo to the Flat Panel.
If yes to Video : what video codecs will be supported?
To the Op : I'm sure you already know this, but a $80-$100 small box can be bought to show all your Photo / Video / Music from Western Digital TV Live, Roku, Apple TV. Note on Apple TV: it does NOT play as many Video codecs as the other two.

Thanks for the reply, musicLover. I'm aware that an additional streaming component can be purchased to access photos/videos on my computer. With music via DLNA already there, I was hoping to see an expansion from just music. My fingers are still crossed. I'm also hoping that someone from Onkyo or someone very familiar with the product will respond and tell us what this new feature is and how it works.

Hi danaaultman,
Home Media was added as a network option and is similar to that of the DLNA option.
Home Media supports Samba Servers which have more flexibility on compatible file format than DLNA servers. While they have greater flexibility with file format support, they do not allow you to see by artist, songs, albums as you can with the DLNA option.
Thank you,

Home Media and Video
I believe the answer is "no" but wish to confirm...
the new Home Media aspect of this new firmware called "Home Media"
this is only for music files correct?
that is,
if I have photos and music on my LAN
(either via NAS or file server),
I can NOT access them via the new "Home Media" feature?
or
Can I access Video files thru the Onkyo's Home Media function?
thanks

Hi MusicLover,
Unfortunately you can not access any video files via the Home Media function.

Video
Thanks, I did not think it would.
Curious though: since any modern HDMI receiver does do onboard video processing, so there has to be video processing chipsets in all units to some degree.
I wonder how hard it would be to be able to play video files from our LAN/NAS/File-Servers thru our Receivers.
Thus erasing the need for a Roku / Western Digital Live box completely.
i also wonder how much Apple charges a stereo company to License Apple AirPlay into a stereo per unit.

Hi MusicLover,
Good questions. Unfortunately this would have to be looked into by someone in our product development department.

Requirements
Hi,
I have some samba servers in my network but my Onkyo does not see them, is there any special requirement/configuration/condition to use this new functionality? It sees my DLNA servers with no problem..
Regards.
