PCM or Bitstream PS3 Slim Empty PCM or Bitstream PS3 Slim

Post  coryryder Fri Oct 26, 2012 5:57 pm

I have the Onkyo HT-S9400THX and PS3 Slim 320gig.

I'm currently using HDMI (not sure brand or version, says highspeed on the cable) to my BD/DVD HDMI input on back of receiver and HDMI out to TV, again not even sure if that is highspeed cable. Not a 3D tv and only supports 720p I think anyway.

Anyway my question is what are best settings for PS3 and receiver. I notice when using setting PS3 to bitstream I get the nice DTS-HD MASTER logo on the receiver but when set to linear PCM it just shows PCM on the receiver.

I'm not concerned about seeing the DTS-HD MASTER logo, I just want lossless audio from PS3 to receiver (Assuming that's the best).

I've heard PCM is lossless and the PS3 does all the decoding so that's why you don't get the fancy logos but I also heard the new slim PS3 sends lossless through bitstream so you get to see the nice logos and is completely uncompressed as well.

Thanks,

PCM or Bitstream PS3 Slim Empty Re: PCM or Bitstream PS3 Slim

The new PS3 Slim model can output a bitstream uncompressed audio signal so that the receiver can decode DOLBY TRUE HD and DTS HD-MASTER AUDIO. In order to do this you must go to the sound settings in the PS3 menu go to BD/DVD settings and make sure HDMI and optical are set to bitstream. Go to Sound Settings then press the “X” button on the controller. Click on HDMI then click on manual settings. Make sure that Dolby Digital, Dolby True HD, DTS, AAC, and DTS Master, are all checked. Then make sure that only the 2 channel PCM are checked (only two that can not be unchecked.) And all other PCM settings would not be checked or the unit will still revert to multichannel. Go to the next menu by pressing right on the Directional pad of the controller and press “X” to save you settings. Following this procedure will allow the receiver's to decode the uncompressed formats and have them displayed on the receiver.
