***TX-NR515 and TX-NR616 Firmware Notification*** Empty Firmware update

Post  nwhetsel10241980 Thu Aug 09, 2012 3:33 pm

Onkyo team,

What is going to be in this firmare update? And what is the problem being fixed?

Here is my problem or issue at hand. I have txnr515. When running hdmi into receiver from a PS3 or my blu- ray player I'm getting what they are refferring on every other messageboard a "Handshake" issue. I get picture however i have glitches in my screen that look like white fuzz. After about 5 minutes my screen goes blank then comes back on. When i change my settings to 1080i and turn off dark color settings on my PS3 the problem is not there. I want to run in 1080p which i was told was the best picture quality there was and this receiver could handle it. My Blu-Ray player will not allow me to change my output settings to 1080i and can't play any movies on this unit because it cuts in and out. When I called Customer service they said they had not estimated time frame of when this would be fixed. This has been going on for over 2 months now and as much as I love this receiver this problem still has not been fixed and customer service said they were working on it.

I have ran my 25 ft cable from my Epson 8350 Projecter straight to my Blu Ray player and straight to my Ps3 and had no glitches in the screen at 1080p. I have tried a six ft cable as well and this did nothing. Im running monster cables that are rated at advanced high speed 24.4 gbps.

Please help

Post  ndskurfer Thu Aug 09, 2012 4:12 pm

.3% seems very light. My parents purchased an NR515 and an NR616 from separate vendors. I must have hit the right time to update the NR616 - after I updated the firmware last over a week ago, we have not had an issue with the remote. I did not run the update on the NR515 till this past weekend, and it has sufferred from the remote issue since installation a few weeks ago, and it is still not resolved.

Thankfully the video output problems that both sufferred from appear to have been fixed.

***TX-NR515 and TX-NR616 Firmware Notification*** Empty How about 'no video'

Post  ChrisNow Fri Aug 10, 2012 8:49 pm

Firmware 8-10-12 addressing 'power on' issue.
How about 'no video' issue. This problem involves, looks, many more 515 and 616 owners then 3%. When you Onkyo address 'no video' issue ?

***TX-NR515 and TX-NR616 Firmware Notification*** Empty Safe?

Post  IBamBam Fri Aug 10, 2012 11:05 pm

My question is...is it safe? I applied the last firmware update before they pulled it and I had no problems, and I still don't. Should this be one of those "if it ain't broke don't fix it" updates? I really do not want to have the problems that I have been reading about even if it is "only" .3%. Hmmmm think i'll wait a week...

Post  hodell Fri Aug 10, 2012 11:13 pm

for what its worth - i applied to my 616 about two hours ago and it appears to be working normally. I can't comment on problems that others have had with various upgrades and i can't tell you what it may have fixed - but it didn't brick my 616. I do know that pass-through works, as well as using the remote for on/off, etc. beyond that - can't really help.

it required two downloads and the related updating process for each. took about 15 minutes max to complete.

hope that helps.

Post  Gray44 Sat Aug 11, 2012 2:58 am

Yesterday I had the problem that I could not start my receiver from the remote.
I supose this problem is/was impacting 100% of the customers and just .3% of the customers made an official complaint.
(It does not happen all the time and there is a simple workaround, push the start-button on the receiver itself...)

So it`s good they fixed it with this update. pirat

***TX-NR515 and TX-NR616 Firmware Notification*** Empty I agree!! What about the "No video signal" problem?

Post  mgause Mon Aug 13, 2012 11:30 am

I agree with ChrisNow below....The "no video signal" problem is alive and well. Onkyo seems to have dropped the ball on this one. When can we expect a firmware update on this problem? Unplugging a receiver to reset it is not a solution.

Post  Bitsmart Corp Mon Aug 13, 2012 8:12 pm

I'm an integrator and have experienced the no remote control and no HDMI problems on 100% of the NR515 and NR616 receivers we've installed in the last 3 months. My failure rate seems to be a lot higher than 0.3% The last failed unit was purchased only 3 weeks ago, that tells me that Onkyo is knowingly selling a defective product. I also just had a 6 month old NR609 burn out, with a very unhappy customer. We've been selling Onkyo products for the last 10 years, but it looks like we will be switching to Denon or Marantz, I have no faith in Onkyo anymore. Onkyo could only change my mind if: 1. They fix the firmware problem on the NR515 and NR616, 2. Reimburse me for the 8 service calls I've made to customer's homes, 3. Repay me for the embarrassment of having to tell my customers that if they want to watch TV they have to crawl on their hands and knees into the equipment cabinet and unplug their brand-new $600 Receiver. Why would Onkyo continue to sell this product when they KNOW it is defective? I'm sorry Onkyo, but you just lost 35 sales a year from us.

***TX-NR515 and TX-NR616 Firmware Notification*** Empty Maybe recall ?

Post  ChrisNow Mon Aug 13, 2012 8:54 pm

Do you hear Onkyo ? Distributors and service man are switching to other brands, because you not only did not fix the problems, but you STILL SELLING units with the problems. Shouldn't you consider RECALL 515, 616 (609 ?), and fix them or replace to protect your reputation, like did for example Intel with Sandy Bridge 67 series, when they replaced thousands of motherboards ?

***TX-NR515 and TX-NR616 Firmware Notification*** Empty Does the new firmware address 'No Video' issue?

Post  MusicHK Tue Aug 14, 2012 12:09 am

Hi Onkyo,

I am the victim of those 0.3% customers and have been waiting for a firmware update to address the 'No Video' issue.

The new firmware mentioned above addressed the 'Remote Control' issue. If this is the only fixing/reason for upgrade, I would choose to pass and wait further. If the firmware contains fixing attempt to fix 'No Video', then I would like to give it a try.

So can you tell me if the new firmware has the 'No Video' fixing or not so that I can decide to upgrade or not?

** Update **
Just noticed update in other post saying the new firmeware does not solve the 'No Video' issue. So I will skip this one.

***TX-NR515 and TX-NR616 Firmware Notification*** Empty TX-NR616

Post  knookuk Sat Aug 18, 2012 4:54 am

I have an Onkyo TX-NR616
Connected it a WDTV Live, Panasonic DMP-BD30 and a Humax Foxsat HDR.

All connected using High Speed HDMI cables.

The problem I have is with the Blu Ray Player, where intermittently the picture blanks, but sound can still be heard.
I have reset the HDMI connections to no effect.
The blanking of the picture is not consistent but if I did not know better it occurs when there is a layer change.
Some disks are worse than others.

Advice?
I always update the firmware when asked.

Cheers

・ ARC/ HDMI CONTROL (RIHD) enabled? How is receiver connected to NETWORK- Ethernet cable or UWF-1 :

・ How many times it happens out of how many you tried? How many times needed to unplug receiver?:

・ Current F/W version on receiver:

・ Current Video Resolution (while holding DISPLAY button on front panel of receiver):

- Serial Number of receiver:

- Dealer/ Date of Purchase:

- Using HDMI Ethernet/ HDMI Hi-Speed:

This information is greatly appreciated and will aid in replicating the issue and work towards a resolution to this issue. Please email this information to onkyoadmin@us.onkyo.com so we can further troubleshoot.

***TX-NR515 and TX-NR616 Firmware Notification*** Empty Should Onkyo consider RECALL / REFUND on recent faulty TR515 (or similar series)?

Post  MusicHK Thu Aug 23, 2012 2:25 am

Should Onkyo consider to recall & refund our faulty receiver?

I personally found the less than 0.3% faulty rate claim suspicious. I had my 1st receiver replaced with a new unit in one week's time hoping to solve the problem. Both units exhabit exactly the same problem. You may say I am just unlucky; but that gives me a good reason of doubt that the faulty ratio is higher than that.

Anyway, if the ratio is really that low, then a recall & refund is even less a concern to execute. By doing so, it helps to cool down the frustrated customers; helps to release pressure on Japan Engineers who then have more time and breathing space to carefully examine the problem and to find out what went wrong. It looks to me they still have no clue about this problem.

That also save Onkyo's brand and image which is damaged seriously because of this incident. The damage is done but there is still opportunity to save the image. What Onkyo should do is to stand up and tell frustrated customers that it will not escape from its responsibility and won't let the loyal customers down. It could make a promise to do immediate recall, or a promise to refund by xx-xx-xx if fixing is still not available. That way, all people who suffer from this incident can see a way out, including Onkyo itself.

Post  OnkyoUSA Thu Aug 23, 2012 6:14 pm

We are still in the progress of resolving this issue; but would like some information from those afflicted with this issue to provide the following data for further research:

• Make/model of source device(s):

• Does this happen with all sources? If not, which one(s)?

• Make/model and length of HDMI cables/extenders/etc :

• When does this happen (always at initial power on, when switching sources, while watching a particular source, combination)?

• Make/model of TV/ Projector:

• Approximately how often does this happen (1 out of 10 times, etc)?

• How many times has this happened?

• How long has the unit been installed?

• What is the exact firmware version (check by going to FW update via the "Home" button on the remote)?

• What is the HDMI Monitor Out setting (Auto, THRU, etc)?

• Are you using HDMI OUT MAIN or SUB?

• What is the Picture Mode (Custom, Cinema, Through, Direct, etc)?

• Is HDMI Control (RIHD) On or Off (look in Hardware Setup-> HDMI)?

• Is HDMI THRU On or Off (look in Hardware Setup-> HDMI)?

• Is Net Standby On or Off ((look in Hardware Setup-> Network)?

• What is the Incoming and Outgoing video resolution (press the Display Button on the front panel until it shows both… should be something like "1080p/60 -> 1080p/60")

We appreciate all responses and look forward to resolving this issue promptly. Thank you again for your patronage, patience, and cooperation.

***TX-NR515 and TX-NR616 Firmware Notification*** Empty What are all the files ?

Post  david_l312 Fri Aug 24, 2012 2:58 am

I downloaded the update. Are all the files needed ?
Why are the older and newer files in there ?

In the zip file I see 3 files and a folder:

06/14/2012 11:48 PM <DIR> AVR000D_Release
06/14/2012 11:48 PM 512 ONKAVR000D_00EAEA00EAEAEA.of1
06/14/2012 11:48 PM 17,470,464 ONKAVR000D_00EAEA00EAEAEA.of2
06/14/2012 11:48 PM 18,197,248 ONKAVR000D_00EAEA00EAEAEA.of3

In the AVR000D_Release Folder There is:

08/09/2012 11:48 PM 512 ONKAVR000D_00EAEA00EAEAEA.of1
08/09/2012 11:48 PM 17,470,464 ONKAVR000D_00EAEA00EAEAEA.of2
08/09/2012 11:48 PM 12,046,848 ONKAVR000D_00EAEA00EAEAEA.of3
08/09/2012 11:48 PM 6,413,312 ONKAVR000D_00EAEA00EAEAEA.of4

What is the "AVR000D_Release" folder down a level in the ZIP file ?
Is everything needed on the USB stick for the update ?
Is this the 2-step update mentioned in the instructions ?

Post  hodell Mon Aug 27, 2012 12:20 pm

Dear ONKYO - listed below is the information requested related to my TX-NR616. I have to say that in the last week my receiver has exhibited most of the problems we have been experiencing since release. I think it is time for ONKYO to institute a recall or other proactive approach for addressing that fact that many of us purchased a defective product from you and are still, after months of patience still having problems that require user actions like unplugging our product repeatedly and having to try and figure out your confusing directions and requests. I am still waiting for an answer to my emails from over six weeks ago concerning this defective receiver.
