NR616 Component & HDMI out Empty NR616 Component & HDMI out

Post  rolinger Mon Aug 13, 2012 12:59 pm

Hello all.

I have read many users posting issues with their recievers and hope mine isn't suffering the same.

How do I get the receiver to do Component Out? I want all devices to be HDMI except for my GAME Input(Xbox 360). The Xbox 360 is Component In to the receiver, and I want it to do Component Out to the TV but can't figure out how to set it up that way.

I understand the up-conversion issue from Component In to HDMI Out requires the source device to be sending in 480i format (which is pathetic - whats the point of up-conversion, uh....if it can't do up-conversion) thus is the reason I want to do all Component In/Out for the Xbox - I would like to preserve my gaming at 720p or 1080i (it also serves as my DVD player).

When in the receiver setup mode, I see Monitor Out, HDMI IN and Component IN. I set HDMI In to ----- and I set Component In to "IN1". But on Monitor Out I see no way...or any other way...to set GAME to Component In and then Monitor Out. I bypassed the receiver and connected my Xbox directly to the TV and it was working just fine.

Please help. Thank you.

NR616 Component & HDMI out Empty Connections

In menu 1.3, set Game to In1. Then when you select Game on the receiver, the video source attached to the component video input will be routed to the component video output and on to your TV. Select the component input on your TV and you should see your XBox. Ensure no HDMI cable is plugged into the Game HDMI port though.

NR616 Component & HDMI out Empty Re: NR616 Component & HDMI out

I just checked my Xbox 360 settings. Its video OUT options are: 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. There is no setting for 480i. Thus I think even if I wanted to do the 4K up-conversion I don't think it would work that way.

I connected the Xbox directly to the TV via Component In and then went through all four Xbox video out settings; all four video options worked direct to the TV. I then connected the Xbox back to the Onkyo, verified HDMI GAME was set to "-----" and Component GAME was set to "IN1". Next I went through every single setting for Monitor Out -> Main (Auto, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, 1080p/24 and 4K)....and paired each setting with the four Xbox video settings and I still could not get a picture. Starting to wonder if my Component In is even working.

So, back to my original question: How do I get GAME to be Component In & Component Out yet keep everything else to HDMI Out?

NR616 Component & HDMI out Empty Monitor Out?

Post  steverobertsbbc Mon Aug 13, 2012 2:13 pm

I'm not sure Monitor Out is even a consideration here. If you have IN1 set as your Game source and you have selected Game mode, then the component video going in should come straight out again. There's no conversion going on here, whatever input resolution you input is what will be output, see the table of inputs and outputs in the manual. Have you tried switching the amp off at the wall and then back on again to give it a proper reset?

steverobertsbbc :

My first reply to my own topic occurred almost at the same time you posted your first response. I am going to try both your suggestions now and will post back with results.

Thanks.

NR616 Component & HDMI out Empty Re: NR616 Component & HDMI out

I have the same issue. I have set the "component in" to the output of my cable box. I have an HDMI from the receiver going to the TV (Main HDMI out). I don't get any output on the tv from the cable box. It works fine when I plug components directly into the Tv.

I set CBL/SAT to Component In1 and Monitor out is set to the Main HDMI port.

This used to work fine on my Onkyo SR605.

I hope this receiver doesn't require me to have a component out to the TV. From reading the manual it doesn't seem like this should be a problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Ok, I realize what your first post was saying and changed my cable box output to 480i only and it now the output is visible through the receiver and it upconverts. It was a pass-through in the SR605, so I did not expect that.

Thanks.

NR616 Component & HDMI out Empty Re: NR616 Component & HDMI out

I could never get my Xbox to work through Onkyo via the Component In/HDMI Out setting. I went through every single Xbox/Onkyo video rates combination and nothing worked. Sound always worked though.

I did, however, get the Xbox to work via Component In to Onkyo and Onkyo Component Out to TV. A bit frustrating since the whole idea of getting this Onkyo was to avoid having to use more than one cable type to the TV. It works for now. I ordered a VGA to HDMI converter today for my laptop - and it also has a set of Component to HDMI ports on it as well (you toggle a switch on the converter to use either VGA or Component that you want to up-scale convert to HDMI). If the converter works then I can connect my Xbox and my Laptop to the converter and then the converter to the Onkyo and remove all the additional VGA and Component cables going to the TV.

I will also be buying a digital fiber audio cable today to take advantage of the better audio quality than the red/white analog for the Xbox.

However...I WOULD LOVE if someone told me how to get my Xbox to work direct to the Onkyo Component In and HDMI Out to the TV. As I mentioned before, my Xbox 360 Video out settings are 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p - but no 480i (which I find odd, because others claim they have set theirs to 480i out).

I have the same problem and just found and Onkyo rep response on another forum, but it applies to this as well:

" Re: Connecting component input projector to TX-NR616
OnkyoUSA on Tue Oct 23, 2012 2:27 pm

Unfortunately; this will NOT be optional on the TX-NR 616 receiver- as using RCA COMPOSITE and/or COMPONENT VIDEO cables into the receiver and trying to go out of the receiver via HDMI will require the incoming nn-HDMI conection/source to be inputted into the receiver via 480i video signal. If you try using this connection and trying to get a 1080i or 1080p video signal via the COMPONENT video connection- it will not broadcast this signal. Both the TX-NR 515 and NR 616 receivers requires this configuration; unlike the TX-NR 717 and above receiver that can automatically upconvert and output via COMPONENT and HDMI connections.

If you have any more questions or concerns, Please contact our Product Support Dept for further assistance with this specific issue via our phone number and hours of operation (800-229-1687; option #3 PRODUCT SUPPORT 24 hours a day). We would like to speak with you and work to troubleshoot and resolve your issue as prompt as possible.

So it looks like the only way around is to view xbox in 480 (ugh - tried it and it looks terrible) or connect to a separate input on your tv. Wish I had known this before I got the receiver, although xbox's without HDMI are rare these days. I'm sure I'll get the red ring of death soon enough Smile
