TX-NR509 USB Master Folder Play?

Post  Robisan on Fri Jan 06, 2012 6:31 pm

Just bought the TX-NR509 and have a question I haven't seen answered here -- I can't seem to get it to play all (mp3) files in the master folder on the USB drive. Folder structure as follows:

USB>Music>Artist>Album(s)>mp3 files

When I select Play at the "Music" level it defaults to the first "Artist" level folder. Same thing when I select Play at the top "USB" level -- it defaults to the first "Artist" folder. Is there some setting that needs changing? Do I need to rename or restructure the file directory? I want to be able to 'play all' (on random/shuffle) of the files on the USB drive while maintaining the Artist>Album folder structure. Thanks.

Hello, anyone? OnkyoUSA?

Is it really not possible to "play all" content from a USB thumb drive?

Hi Robisan,
We are terribly sorry for the delay. The forum is extremely busy and sometimes questions get lost in the bulk. Please check the notes section on page 22 of your manual. Do any of these apply to your situation? If you do not have a manual here is our blog post on how to download one: http://onkyousacustomersupportblog.wordpress.com/2011/09/13/owner%e2%80%99s-manuals/ Thank you for contacting Product Support via our forum.

None of the notes apply to my situation. Let me clarify:

I am connecting a 16gb thumb drive directly into the 509 USB port. The drive contents are entirely unprotected mp3 files. Here is the file structure on the drive:

USB>Music>Artist>Album(s)>mp3 files

The 509 recognizes and plays contents if I select a folder level that contains mp3 files.

My problem: I want to be able to play all of the files on the drive in random/shuffle mode. If I select "Play" at the "Music" folder in the file structure above, the 509 defaults to and plays only the first sub-folder that contains mp3 files (in my case, the first "Artist" level folder has no "Album" folders, so that's what loads and plays).

I tried creating and placing a playlist on the drive, but it doesn't appear as an option in the 509 display of contents. Is there a playlist format the 509 will recognize and display?

Is there any other way (other than just putting all mp3 files in one folder) to "play all" of a USB thumb drive contents? If not, is there any chance this might be addressed in a software update?

Thanks.

Hi Robisan,

The USB inputs are pretty basic so you really can not do the repeat or random play and or shuffle on a straight USB thumb drive, to get all those functions you will need something like a dock station or hard disk drive.

How would this work with a hard disk drive? That's just a different type of storage media. How can the 509 do more with files delivered from a hard drive than from a flash drive?

Hi Robisan,
We are sorry you were unable to get the features you wanted. If you would like to look into a docking station here is our accessories page from our website: http://www.onkyousa.com/prod_class.cfm?class=Accessory&Source=hdrmenu Thank you for contacting Onkyo via our forum.

Wow! Just wow! But you forgot the middle finger Emotican. #fail

I'm sorry if I offended by asking about the hard disk drive option that you suggested. My bad.

The overview page on the Onkyo website for the TX-NR509 states:
"Further connectivity highlights include a new front-panel USB port that offers a clean digital link for both iPod/iPhone and USB storage devices,..."
I'm sorry if it's unreasonable for me to expect the 509 to provide the most basic playback functions from "USB storage devices" that your website claims it supports. Again, my bad.

I have saved this entire thread (and my private message that you failed to respond to) in the likely event that you choose to delete it. I will be contacting Onkyo regarding the entirely inappropriate handling of this matter.

Please, stay classy.

Hi Robisan,

I do apologize for my misinformation but it seems you can repeat, shuffle and do the random playback using a thumb drive. On page 20 of the manual under "Controlling contents of USB or Network Devices" it explains on how you would go about doing this. Again I do apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

That still brings me back to my original question/problem:

I really don't mean to be difficult. I'm just trying a direct answer to my question.

Hi Robisan,

Unfortunately you will only be able to shuffle/repeat one folder at a time if I understand you correctly.

I'm glad I was "here to help you" understand how your product works, turning the mission of this Forum on its head. Alas, my desire to "be able to ask Product Support Questions about your Onkyo Products and get answers" as to whether my understanding is correct or not will go unfulfilled.

In the year 2012, an "Audio" product that will only allow the playback of one single folder of audio content at a time is extremely rudimentary and inadequate. If my understanding is correct, I hope Onkyo will address this and provide additional functionality in a software update.

Dear Support!

I'm facing the same annoying problem with my 509.
Is there any update since Robisan wrote about it?
It would be a simple option, if at the end of a folder the player would just jump to the next one. I think this one is not a complicated feature (every mp3 player is capable of this feature in 2012, even the cheapest ones), and could be implemented in a new firmware update.

Please update us!

Thanks in advance.
