TX-NR609 video problems Empty TX-NR609 video problems

Post  stevesul Tue Dec 11, 2012 12:09 pm

I have owned the TX-NR609 for about 8 months. I occasionally have issues where the video is not passed through the receiver. Sound still comes through to the HT speakers.

I know it is not a cable issue as I have replaced the cable twice when this has happened. Whenever this occurs, I need to factory reset the receiver and the video immediately comes back. This is a complete waste of time because I then need to go through setting up Audyssey and all the other setup steps. This takes at least 30-40 minutes….multiply that by a few times and I have wasted hours on this receiver.

Last night my wife was watching TV with the receiver off. Suddenly, we lost picture (and sound). No signal was being passed to the TV. I turned the receiver on and we got audio through the HT speakers but no video. I have the HDMI through set to CBL/SAT so it should always be passing the Cable signal through when powered off. A factory reset on the TX-NR-609 immediately fixed this. Fortunately I was home…the other times it has happened when I was not home so the rest of my family is without use of the TV until I reset the receiver.

The receiver was not on last night so it was not overheating. I have plenty of space on top for airflow and I leave the doors open in front to allow extra airflow through the open back.

This is a complete waste of time and there obviously is a widespread issue reading posts on here. Is there a firmware fix for this? Why would a factory reset always resolve this if it wasn’t a firmware issue? Why would this stop working when the receiver has been powered off for nearly 24 hours and worked fine for 3-4 hours prior.

Hi Steve,

I do not have the same receiver but try this. It was the TOTAL FIX to the issues I was having with my
TX-NR717. I have found and with helping others on this board with success. Unplug the unit from the power supply for exactly 5 minutes. This is considered a "soft boot"; you will NOT lose any of your settings. After you have it unplugged for the 5 minutes, plug it back in and see what happens. After it is plugged back give it a min or so, and then turn the receiver on and hopefully this will help.

I have the TX-NR717, had a few issues that for the life of me could not figure out after a firmware update. Found and did this. My TX-NR717 has been working like a champ ever since .

I will always do this after a major update. It makes sense if you think about it. PC's, Cells, Tablets all reboot after an update.

Hope this helps. ENJOY!

Post here and let all know if this works.

I appreciate the reply FlyByNgt. I will take note of it next time if this occurs again and try unplugging for 5 minutes. If that works, it will save me the time/trouble of redoing all of the settings.

The firmware was not updated recently so I know a firmware flash did not cause this issue (I have the most recent as I checked only a few weeks ago).

The receiver this replaced never did anything like this for the three years I owned it. I set it up once and it worked until the TX-NR609 replaced it.

I am hoping someone from Onkyo responds with a way to prevent this from occurring. Is there a setting I can change? I have RIHD Off and HDMI Through set to CBL/SAT. I assume setting it to CBL/SAT would make it work more often than if it was set to LAST.

Steve, All I can suggest is not to wait until next time it happens. The same with my TX-NR717. It was driving me and then I was driving Onkyo nuts over it. I found that on a AVS forum and tried it as soon as I finished reading the tip. I have NOT HAD A PROBLEM SINCE. It has been about a month now.

I leave my unit as yours set to "Through set to CBL/SAT" it did act up before I did the "soft boot" Try it my friend before it happens again so you can sit and enjoy if it corrects the issue. Let us know here.

OK, I will give it a try tonight. This last video issue happened late last night so I didn't get the opportunity to run through the setup. I will set it back up tonight after trying your soft reset.

My issue has happened 3-4x now...so it's not a monthly thing.
