TX-NR5008 Quality Problems

Post  alo on Mon Dec 10, 2012 1:20 pm

I bought the "flagship" Onkyo Home theater receive in February of 2011 to replace my Onkyo 777 (which died after 5 years of service). After a few months the receiver lost the ability to communicate with the remote. I contacted Onkyo service and while they provided a shipping label, I was without my receiver for 2 or 3 weeks. Now the same receiver has no audio and I once again contacted Onkyo and had to "fight" with the service department to have them pick up shipping. From what I hear on the internet, This is a problem with the HDMI board. I've heard some people have had to wait over a month to get this fixed.
I work at National Instruments and have over 30 years experience in electronic design an manufacturing and am well aware of the high failure rate for repaired products. What are the chances of a twiced repaired product failing again. I'd say more likely than not. This receiver will be out of warranty in February and I'm seriously considderring selling it before the warranty runs out. It this typical of Onkyo reliability? I'd expect allot more from a home theater product at this price point.

I had this issue- I would've asked for a trade-in over repair to be honest.. who's to say the next board wouldn't have any issues?
