TX-NR5008 No Sound
I've just registered on this forum this evening to attempt to troubleshoot the deteriorating and final loss of audio (video still works) on all HDMI inputs of my TX-NR5008 receiver. It appears that I share a condition that is chronic across a range of Onkyo products. Can someone please advise on a path to correcting this problem?
Thank you

Re: TX-NR5008 No Sound
well i had a tx-nr807, which i loved, but the hdmi board went bad. out of warranty, but i found a guy that refurbed boards for 65 bucks, so i sent him mine and got back a refurb that i put in...it worked great for 2 weeks until a thunderstorm power surged my house taking out several electronics including the amp. i then bought a tx-nr3009 which i loved until this weekend when it went into protection mode and said check sp wire. i did. everything was cool. let it cool down and finally got sound again. however, if i switch to net music, or the bluray player from cable input. you guessed it. it craps out shuts down and thats it.
i'm beginning to think the solution to this problem is buying a different brand of receiver. too bad to, cause i really like them when they work. bi-amp some polk monitor 70 and have 7.1 surround going too. sound freaking great .....when it makes sound.

Update - Contact with Onkyo USA
I just got off the line with Onkyo corporate and they are declining to provide me with an internal customer service support contact (real person) who can respond to me on this chronic no sound issue. The agent was certainly helpful & apologetic but he is following a corporate protocol to distance the customer from those who may be in the know of the issues & solution(s) behind this problem. I am being pushed off to deal with an authorized service depot but ultimately these depots are under the technical control & direction of corporate Onkyo.
Is there someone at Onkyo willing to respond to me on this matter or do I (like others) have to face the fact that my $2,500 outlay on the TX-NR5008 has been a tremendous mistake on my part given the treatment we are receiving?

Had the same problem, with my set TX-NR3008. Onkyo support was very helpful, due to I was still 4 mo of wartanty left. They sent a prepaid shipping box an off it went to the service center, that was a month ago. Service center informed me that the HDMI board went out, had to order part (still waiting). Will update when I get it back! I hear on most of the AV Blogs that Onkyo's r having a lot of problems with their HDMI boards, I believe it's due to heat. Electronics & Heat dont go together, and Onkyo receivers tend to run hot. But this is a ongoing problem, seams to only effect the 08 thru 11 models. Just saying!! But when I get my receiver back I'm going to put a fan around mines just to keep it cool.

Nr-3008 up and running again
Just want to get back to u all concearning my unit. NR-3008 in which I posted back in Aug. went down due to the HDMI board going out. Again cust service was great for me shipped the box and paid for the postage, had 5 month waranty left. it was serviced by United Radio, it took over a month all n all for the shipping to and from, and parts ordering. servicing ect. Had it back now for a month, test all inputs works as good as new I have been reading the blogs reguarding Onkyo's Reciever unit Hdmi audio wows, what I sugguest is that if you r still under the original Onkyo warranty it would be good idea too get their extended warranty for just a few buck more. It's really worth it!! because for some unknown reason Onkyo doesn't put a heat sink on their hdmi boards, which makes there boards over heat an fail. A heat sink on the board would draw the heat down and out of the unit. I guess they were trying something new, Well Onkyo it doesn't work You could also put a 40mm fan to keep it cool your self, that's what i'm going to do. But if it fails again I'm still covered! (Extended Warranty). Just a thought, Onkyo there's a lot of angry cust. out there who weren't as lucky as me to still be under your 2yr warranty. You might consider honoring those in which are having the Hdmi board failure issues, even if their out of warranty! Just a thought

Recurrent issues with sound
My issues with not having any sound on any of the inputs started first around May 2012. I looked up the authorized service centers and took my TX-NR3008 in for repairs for the 'intermittent sound issue'. The apparently "solved the problem" by performing an IC reflow procedure. Most recently the issues have resurfaced, there is no sound coming out of any of the inputs now. I tried resetting the receiver and everything I could try and the receiver just does not produce any sound at all. The receiver is still under warranty until Dec 2012, so I am hoping that Onkyo support would just pick up the phone or respond to my request for support; I have been trying for the past few days and each time I get the message that there is no operator available to answer the call. No one has yet returned my call or responded to the several messages I sent them.
Does anyone have any recommendations about what I can do at this point? Can I seek legal action?
PS: In addition to the receiver not producing any sound. One other problem I noticed is that the network setup and firmware update options in the setup menu doesn't seem to be enabled now (same as it was when I had this issue in May). I performed a firmware update after I got the receiver back from the authorized local service center in July 2012 and is now on the latest firmware version.

Same trouble here
I just started having this problem this week.
I need answers on this as to what I should do?
I did a reset on it and it didn't help.
However repeated reboots of the system helped.
But this is ridiculous.
2 months after buying this product last year none of the front buttons worked and was termed
"A known issue" by Onkyo techs and Authorized service monkeys.
A year later this happens?
Whose to say whats going to happen next year when its close to warranty expiration?
NO-NO this needs to be recalled and consumers need to be re-issued better receivers.
I wont stand for this!
I am going up the chain with this!
