7.1 on 6.1 speakers in "multichan"

Post  Hastor on Mon Dec 03, 2012 10:52 pm

I'm trying to understand how "multi channel" is handled when I have less than 7.1 speakers. I'm running a 6.1 setup. I just want to be sure that the sound is being positioned properly, and that I'm not losing any channels. I assume that it matrixes things properly to output everything over 6.1, just wanted to be positive that I wasn't letting any sound go without finding its way to one of the speakers.

As the rear center plugs in the left rear surround (setup by audyssey), I wanted to be sure that in Multichannel mode (or any mode) that I wasn't just getting the Left Rear portion of the 7.1 signal from that speaker. What about in Direct mode?

Also, if I went to a 5.1 setup, would all sound be positioned properly then as well? I'm assuming that the surround side/surround rear signals from a 7.1 source would be mixed together into the surround left/right speakers of a 5.1 setup, and additionally into the rear center in a 6.1 config. Is this correct?
