Onkyo TX-NR515 + Definitive Technology ProCinema 60 Speaker System - how to change from 8 to 6 ohms?

Post  dandylan on Sun Dec 02, 2012 4:02 pm

Hello to everyone! I am a new member and I just purchased the Onkyo TX-NR515 receiver and the Definitive Technology ProCinema 60 5.1 speaker system. I have always loved Onkyo receivers and have had great luck with them in terms of durability and sound quality. I am hoping that the TX-NR515 continues this tradition. I must admit I have been worried after seeing all the posts and feedback on multiple websites about HDMI problems with Onkyo's new line of receivers. However, I like Onkyo and have always stood by them so I purchased the TX-NR515 anyways. I should note that I have upgraded the firmware as everyone has recommended.

The question I have is regarding the ohms capability of the receiver. The specs for the TX-NR515 indicate that is capable of 80W/channel at 8 ohms and 125W/channel at 6 ohms. When I selected the ProCinema 60 speaker system, I saw that they had 4-8 ohms outputs listed in the specifications. So my question is:

Is there something I need to set/configure in my Onkyo TX-NR515 that forces it to use 6 ohms and thus get 125W/channel at 6 ohms instead of only 80W/channel at 8 ohms? Or does the receiver "auto-sense" what the speaker can handle and do it automatically? If I recall correctly, on my earlier Onkyo receivers from a while back, there was a switch on the back that would change it from 8 to 4 ohms. I do not see any switch like that on the TX-NR515. The only thing I saw of note was the warning "Caution: Speaker impedance 6-16ohms/speaker" on the back.

Thanks in advance for any and all help! I'm always proud to be an Onkyo owner as I believe they simply sound better when configured properly and last longer when taken care of.

You will NOT need to make any specified adjustments on this receiver- as when set to the default 6 ohm option- the receiver will handle from 6 to 16 ohm speakers. Only when you are planning to use ALL speakers rated at 4 ohms do you need to reconifgure the SPEAKER SETTINGS submenu option to 4 ohms. If you are still experiencing the same issue , Please contact our Product Support Dept for further assistance with this specific issue via our phone number and hours of operation (Monday- Sunday 24 hours a day: (800) 229-1687; option #3 PRODUCT SUPPORT).
