network (internet radio) not displaying

The only way for me to have my laptop connected through my Onkyo TX-NR515 receiver is to set the output to SUB OUT rather than MAIN. When i do this however, I lose the ability to use onkyo commands. ie when it turns on I no longer see the Onkyo bootup, I can not use the settings on TV I have to look at the receivers screen, and when I select NET for radio, I have no image on the tv, I again have to use the small display on the receiver. how can I fix this
