Volume issues between TV and Stereo

Post  rolinger on Tue Nov 20, 2012 5:35 pm

TX-NR616:

Is there a setting I am missing? When watching TV I have to turn the Onkyo up to like 60 or 65 in order to get a decent volume....but then if I switch over to Net or Radio to listen to music the current level of 65 practically scares the daylights out of me - its so loud. Why can't I get the same volume levels out of the TV? TV is hooked in via HDMI from receiver to Onkyo and HDMI Out to TV. Standard setup.

You mention a "receiver" which I take to mean some type of set top box either cable or direct/dish/tivo etc.

Look in the owners manual for that device and perhaps you will find an audio output level control. If so increase the volume (pre-out) there. With some cable boxes you might need to go into the secondary menu of the cable box or contact them for help.

Sorry...no other receiver than the Onkyo:

My setup is as follows:
1. Fios line-in to FIOS cable box
2. Fios box via HDMI to Onkyo NR616
3. Onkyo HDMI out to TV.

When listening to TV I have to get volume up to about 60 or 65 in order to have decent, normal listening audio. But when I switch the Onkyo over to NET music that 65 setting is much much louder.

The following are my FIOS HDTV setop box audio settings

Set-Top Box Volume: Max at 30 (interestingly though, when I bring the volume all the way down to 2 the audio level stays the same, at 1 it cuts in half, at 0 it goes completely off...its like anything between 2 and 30 is max)
Audio Format: Surround. (I changed it to "stereo" and there wasn't any noticeable difference)
Volume Control: Variable (other option is "Fixed" I changed it to that and no change in audio levels
Dynamic Range: Heavy (other options are "Light" and "None"...again, changing to these setting did not affect the audio level)

I have 5.1 set up on the Onkyo. The speaker configuration is as follows:
Subwoofer: yes
Front: Full Band (but just changed it to 80hz(THX), but didn't seem to make a difference), all 5 surround sounds speakers are same 200W ceiling, flush mounted speakers)
Center 60hz
Surround: 100hz

Could be several things with your sound.
Is your Receiver set in Night mode for that particular input? Is your STB set for 5.1 surround or Stereo. Could be a poor HDMI cable between your AVR and STB. Try using a different HDMI or even switch over to optical just to ensure it isn't an HDMI problem. Have you tried putting a blu-ray or dvd off that same input?

That sounds fishy and I suspect the fios box. That being said Lepus could be on to something but I'm pretty sure the "night mode" would not compress the audio that radically. Checking the cables and switching the inputs are good ideas to try but my $$ would be on the fios box having an issue.
