PC connection issues Empty PC connection issues

I have a TX-NR515 receiver. I am trying to connect my Thinkpad T420 laptop to it to play through my TV. The issue is that when I try to connect, both the laptop and the tv respond, but the desktop is not displayed. I just get 'no signal' I have tried with different HDMI inputs (other than pc), I have tried another laptop, and I have tried using a different HDMI cable. I can not for the life of me figure out what I am doing wrong
