TX-SR309: No sound on any channels or headphones / any inputs - acts like all is fine

Post  spaten on Fri Nov 16, 2012 8:59 pm

I have a TX-SR309 (~16mos old). One morning it suddenly stopped outputting sound from any input, to any output.

What I've found:

- It seems to think everything is fine. Everything appears to be working. In fact, when giving it an optical digital signal it turns on the 'PCM' indicator, telling me that it's receiving the digital signal. The PCM indicator goes off if I remove the optical cable. So it's processing the signal correctly?

- All the expected relay 'clicks' occur upon power up.

- I've tried all source inputs, digital, optical, analog in back, analog in front, AM, FM, even the internally generated white noise when performing a speaker level calibration.

- I've tried all speaker output connections A, B, and headphones (plugging the headphones in, I hear the relay switch like I should)

- No sound out of any output channel from any input source.

- Additionally, may be unrelated and I can't say when this occurred. When I plug in a USB stick or iPod that previously worked it says <no storage> and the USB device is receiving no power: i.e. the USB sticks never light up and the iPod never says it's getting a charge. So it would seem that the USB connection is dead.

- All fuses internally are fine

- Power output off the transformer seems appropriate (I don't have specs telling me what they should be) on two of the three cable sets (JL954A / JL952A). However, the JL951A cable off the main transformer is only reading milliVolts at best on all pins (P951/P952/P953/P954). I'm not sure what this affects... but it could be an indicator.

- I've tried a system reset (with power on, hold vcr button and press standby... get 'clear' message)... no change

Even though it's still under warranty; I'm very uneasy about bringing it or shipping it to any (even certified) repair places due to all the bad reports in various forums, including this one.

Any help? Ideas? I'm at the end of my rope. >_<
