Onkyo TX-NR515 Firmware Update Question
Can someone please help me? I purchased a tx-nr515 a couple of weeks ago. I have been away on vacation but am now ready to set this unit up. I wish to update the firmware via USB flash drive and have downloaded the latest update to my PC. When I unzip and extract the files there are the three files that are listed in the Instruction Manual ("ONKAVR****_*********.of1,of2, and of3") dated 6/14/2012 plus a folder named "AVR000D_Release". This folder also contains files "ONKAVR****_*********.of1, of2, and of3" however these files have a more current date (7/3/2012). Should I copy all of the extracted files (".of1,of2,of3" files (dated 6/14/2012) and the "AVR000D_Release folder to my USB flash drive and run the update? Copy only the "of1,of2,of3" files (dated 6/14/2012) and run the update? Copy only the "of1, of2, and of3" files dated 7/3/2012 from the "AVR000D_Release" folder and run the update? Run two separate updates with each set of "of1, of2, and of3" files running the 6/14/2012 files first?
Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

RE: Onkyo TX-NR515 Firmware Update Question
Yeah, I guess including a README file was way too much work on the part of the developers. I was able to update to the 6/14/2012 firmware by putting the files at the root of my USB flash drive - I don't recall off the top of my head if I just left it at the root name of the memory stick after selecting USB or if I pressed Enter and went one level down where it showed me the subdirectories on the device or not. However, I could not get it to update to the 7/3/2012 firmware no matter if I put the files at the root of the flash drive, copied them to the \ONKAVR000D_00EAEA00EAEAEA_114 folder or selecting them from the AVR000D_Release subfolder... the receiver (TX-NR515, BTW) just kept showing me a firmware version of 1100_6103_0300, or if I selected the AVR000D_Release folder, it said No Item. I'm assuming it updated to the 6/14 version, as there's NOTHING in the filename or folders to identify the firmware version as shown on the receiver. I mean, what the heck does 1100_6103_0300 mean in relation to ONKAVR000D_00EAEA00EAEAEA_114?? Even the update instruction PDF from Onkyo does not reference this firmware version.
If I didn't put the files at the root of the flash drive, it gave me no option to Update via USB after selecting the USB device and then the Update Firmware option. Most infuriating in that you'd think you could just select the directory where the updated firmware files were located (since the receiver is obviously capable of reading the directories) and select them.
I've always really liked Onkyo's products and I purchased this to replace a TX-SR304 that just died on me, but as far as the firmware process goes, I'm not impressed. Onkyo should provide better instructions on how to do this... the instructions in the box (***Important Notice***) and in the PDF manual are not identical and neither mentioned having to have the files at the root of the memory stick. A simple README file included with the firmware update would have alleviated a lot of this frustration.

UPDATE - Reading on the forum how the latest firmware update for the NR616 has left many folk's receivers completely dead, maybe it's a blessing in disguise you couldn't get yours to update bajafishin

Email from Onkyo
I received an email from Onkyo Admin today. It advised me: "You will need to input the 3 files plus the zipped folder onto the USB flash drive to upload onto the receiver.". What zipped folder? The Instruction Manual for the TX-NR515 specifically states "Copy the extracted files to the USB device. Be careful not to copy the zip file.". Do they mean to copy the extracted "AVR00D_Release" folder? Who knows? Why can't people be precise in their instructions?
Oh how I yearn for the days when you purchased an A/V receiver and it worked perfectly forever out of the box. No firmware updates were needed (I doubt if these receivers even had updateable firmware). I think that I will hold off on updating the firmware until someone gives me clear and precise instructions on how to do so.

Re: Onkyo TX-NR515 Firmware Update Question
@scoffman, per Onkyo, the latest firmware version is 0300 which was released 6/26. The later date on the USB download bits are identical to the 6/26 release so that's why your system won't upgrade.

Re: Onkyo TX-NR515 Firmware Update Question
It just amazes me that of all the participants in these forums, there is no one out there who has successfully updated their firmware on a 515/616 via USB and can explain to me how they did it. I have participated in numerous forums and if I know the answer on how to solve a particular problem, have always responded with the solution. I guess that doesn't hold true on these forums.

Re: Onkyo TX-NR515 Firmware Update Question
I extracted all of the files to the USB thumb drive and did the update. I noticed there was a sub-folder there too, and actually complained about it previously on these forums. It is confusing to say the least.

Interesting, given that the .of3 files in the two directories aren't the same. The 6/14 version has a size of 18,197,248 bytes and the one in the AVR000D_Release subfolder has a file size of 18,458,624 bytes. Given that they aren't identical and have different date stamps, one would assume they weren't the same revision. Which brings me back to my original point that a little better documentation would be a good thing, because cryptic filenames like ONKAVR000D_00EAEA00EAEAEA.of1 don't really tell you much as to what version it is. Anyway, enough on this topic.
Thanks

Re: Onkyo TX-NR515 Firmware Update Question
USB method as I performed on my TX-NR616: Download the zipped firmware update (latest I downloaded was 6/24 and I believe is now listed as 7/4 but is the same) to your computer. When download is complete, right-click and select extract and a folder by the same name as the zipped folder should be created as result of the extraction or extract to a folder name of your choice. Just be sure whatever the folder name you extract to, only the extracted files and folder exist is in the folder you created. Now, in the folder you extracted to, you should see 3 files (.of1, .of2 and .of3) and a Release folder with 3 more .of files inside it. Copy the 3 files plus the Release folder to your USB flash drive, not the parent folder (you created/extracted to) which contains these 3 files and Release folder.
I plugged the USB flash drive to the receiver then powered up the receiver. From the remote, click the Home button to bring up the Network GUI menu on your TV. Arrow over to firmware and select. You will see your current firmware revision and then below that, the option to update from the USB flash drive. Select to begin the update and in my case, it took 45 minutes and I witnessed 4 to 6 different updates (can't exactly remember how many, but more than three) during this period. I believe the number of updates is determined by the current version of firmware prior to the update. Afterwards, the display will show Completed. I powered the unit off with the power button on the receiver, pulled the USB drive out and powered the system back up and reran the speaker calibration.
Hope this helps.

tkx1138,
Thanks very much for your precise instructions. This is exactly what I have been waiting for. I will perform the update later this week and let you know how it turns out.

Re: Onkyo TX-NR515 Firmware Update Question
Just to let you folks know, I successfully updated my firmware today. I followed the instructions provided by tkx1138 and it went without a hitch. The only difference being that my update only went through 3 iterations instead of the 4 - 6 that tkx1138 witnessed. Again, many thanks tkx1138.

Re: Onkyo TX-NR515 Firmware Update Question
Just a tip for anyone having issues with the receiver not registering that the USB stick is plugged in: check to see what file system the USB drive is using. I had one that was using exFAT as the file system, the receiver wasn't seeing it. I reformatted it to FAT32 and it worked fine. I'm not sure if NTFS or Mac-formatted drives will work or not.

Re: Onkyo TX-NR515 Firmware Update Question
tkx1138, thanks a lot for you precise instruction. i'm doing this update right now from usb-drive, formatted on Mac - that's also the answer on question "will it work the same way on Mac as it works on PC". Yes, it does. Thanks again!
