TX-nr717 USB initializing Empty TX-nr717 USB initializing

Post  speakerlover Thu Oct 25, 2012 11:12 am

I had my TX-NR717 for a month, and just got around to try the USB to use my iphone for music. However, after I connected the front USB with the iphone, the receiver showed "Now Initializing..." for over an hour. I finally disconnected the phone.

Is it normal for the initializing to be this long? The manual, by the way, only states that once a USB device is connected, the receiver will show 'connecting...' , not 'initializing'. Not sure what to do. Help is appreciated!

Have you also tried resetting the receiver to determine if the USB port is now initialized and functional? Try a SOFT reset (which will not cause loss of information) by unplugging the receiver from the power source for approx 5-10 minutes and also removing any connections into the USB port. Replug the receiver and when you power up the receiver; press the USB button and wait for the "NOW INITIALIZING" message to disappear. Then plug the USB device into the USB port and await the message. The " NOW INTIALIZING" message should appear for no more than 15-20 seconds before syncing with the USB connected device.

TX-nr717 USB initializing Empty It's counterintuitive but it works

Post  WildWilly Sun Nov 11, 2012 9:52 pm

I tried a "soft" reset & that did nothing. A hard factory reset worked. But the thing is this is a totally bogus solution. I just bought this unit. I'm the only person who has ever used it. It's brand new. And the very first time I try to connect a USB device, it fails? And the solution is to do a factory reset? Excuse me? This unit JUST CAME FROM THE FACTORY!!!! Didn't you guys do a factory reset at the factory? This really is unacceptable. These units should be shipped in functioning condition. It's really annoying that after doing a week of minor tweaking & customizing that I have to repeat all of that just because you forgot to do a factory reset at the factory before you shipped the unit from the factory.

I'm making it sound like I'm losing my temper & suffering a near-fatal rise in blood pressure. I'm not. I'm just bewildered that you could ship your units without making sure all features are working. I think it's totally reasonable to expect that a unit that just came from the factory had a factory reset performed on it. Isn't that why it's called a factory reset? Because you do one at the factory? If not, then you should put a big directive on page 1 of the quick install guide saying that as soon as you power the unit on for the very first time out of the box, you should do a hard factory reset.

And I've seen instructions that say to do a hard factory reset you should press & hold the VCR button & then hold down the main power button. Well, there is no VCR button. Not even a button labeled VCR/something or something/VCR. On my unit, it was the CBL/SAT button that did the trick. Your mileage may vary, I suppose.

Now that I've unburdened myself of that rant, I must say the USB connection for an iPod works fine. I was expecting to use the iPod itself to start, stop, skip, play, etc. but the 717 actually takes over the iPod. You can't use the iPod itself to control anything. That's kind of cool. It takes a little getting used to how the controls in the receiver work because they're a little more cumbersome than controlling the iPod directly. But it does show everything in the unit's display pretty much like they show up on the face of the iPod. (I don't have an HD TV so if there's some nicer way of doing this through the OSD, I can't take advantage of it. Besides, you shouldn't have to turn on the TV to play music off an iPod.) One thing that doesn't work, as far as I can tell, is the skip buttons. In the owner's manual (PDF version) on page 24 there's a picture of the remote & I will use the numbers there to explain what I'm talking about. It would be intuitive to expect that the buttons 4 & 13 would skip to the previous & next tracks in the iPod. As far as I can tell, this is not true, despite the fact that the manual says these buttons should do that. Button 4 seems to restart the current track & I think button 13 skips forward some number of seconds in the current track. Maybe my iPod is so old that it doesn't work with these buttons but newer iPods do. Maybe another poster can comment on this. In my case, I have to use the buttons in the ring, the ones identified as 2, and the ENTER button in the center of the ring, to navigate up & down the menu hierarchy to select different tracks. OK. That's not what I expected but at least I found a way that makes it work. The way it works is SLAVISHLY consistent, to the point where I keep forgetting that I have to go up one more level all the time.

So yes, after a factory reset that you SHOULDN'T HAVE TO DO, the USB port does finally initialize & work.
