Compatible Speakers for TX-NR609?

Post  ramkyo on Mon Nov 05, 2012 12:40 pm

Greetings to all.

I have recently purchased an Onkyo TX-NR609 (receiver only) and currently shopping for some good quality speakers compatible for this model. The goal is to connect the new speakers and this receiver to my Sony Bravia XBR 52' TV and a Samsung Blue ray player. The whole setup is for a family room 15wide x 25long. My understanding is that this receiver supports 7 speakers. There are two Bose speakers already inbuilt to my ceiling and i'm planning to buy the remaining 5 speakers and pair all of them with TX-NR609. The plan is to mount the new speakers to the ceiling so that they don't take any floor space and the sound is distributed uniformly across the family room.

Please suggest some best speakers, thank you.

The 609 is capable of 7.2 surround (2 subwoofers if desired). I am by no means an expert, however your best bet would be to match the remaining speakers by brand. I realize a complete BOSE system is a little pricey, but they do sound nice. I my self have a mix matched setup with Pioneer, Scott, and Cambridge Soundworks. The system sounds very good for my taste. If I had it to do again, I would probably go with same brand across the board. There are alot of brands available depending on your budget. As far as placing the speakers in the ceiling, I believe you would get a better overall soundfield if the center and front r/l were facing the viewing area. Perhaps a wall mounted system would work for your setup. Of course the sub really needs to set on the floor, but can be put in pretty much any spot in the room. With the 609 you can either have back surround or front height speakers Were you planning on using the BOSE you have in place as mains or surround ? With them in the ceiling they would probably make great surround speakers. Again a matched set may be your best bet. One thing I suggest is you purchase heavy enough speaker wire. I am using 12 ga. that I purchased from monoprice and also banana plugs makes for a clean install. Let us know what you decide on purchasing. Hope this helps
