TX-NR515 Firmware Update 10/09/12

Post  LennyHO on Sat Oct 20, 2012 6:58 pm

I just read the update instructions for the 10/09/12 firmware release for the TX-NR515 and noticed that there are now limitations when using the UWF-1 (wi-fi adapter). The one that concerns me is "Using rear USB port is not supported". I don't get it. I thought "USB" stood for "UNIVERSAL Serial Bus". Why should one USB port be any different from the others? If these ports were intended to act differently from one another shouldn't they have been named "LSB" for "LIMITED Serial Bus"? I have my wi-fi adapter plugged into the rear USB port because it is out of the way and when I need to update firmware I plug my USB flash drive into the front USB port without having to disturb the wi-fi adapter. This restriction is stupid. I have never heard of a device that has multiple USB ports restricting their use. Does anyone else feel as I do about this?

The USB found on the rear of the receiver is a USB 1.1 port; and the version in front portion is a USB 2.0 port. Both are not limited; as we have connected UWF-1s, USB flash drives, iPods, iPhones, etc onto both the front and rear USB ports with NO issues- thus that are NOT limited. It is actually a lower speed USB port found on the rear chassis- but it is not supported due to the speed differences between the two ports and information being transmitted thru both ports.

Forum Moderator,
Thanks for responding. Your explanation makes sense. However much as I hate to belabor the point, and not being an electrical engineer or even being knowledgeable about electronics, I must ask this question. Why did they put a USB 1.1 port in the rear of the receiver? If the front USB port is USB version 2.0, which I understand is backward compatible with USB version 1.1, the circuitry for USB 2.0 must already exist in the receiver. Could they not have put another USB 2.0 port in the rear of the receiver? Like I said, I am ignorant when it comes to electronics but this does not make sense to me. I have multiple USB 2.0 ports on my PC and I am able to plug USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 devices into these ports without problems. Thanks in advance for your response and I will not belabor this point again.

This is the specifications and configuration of our receivers with the use of the varying USB ports. There is no current information to suggest any implementation of USB 2.0 ports on any of our upcoming units; but will pass this correspondence to the proper department.
