To 616 or not to 616. That "IS" the question
Hi all,
Can a noob get some advice?
I have been saving to get a HDMI receiver and put my 11 year old Sony out to pasture.
I am quite enchanted by the 616.
However all the issues and chatter as well as the check SP wire and brick makers have got me concerned.
I do see the FW update has helped some folks.
Bottom line. Do you all feel the 616 is stable or should I look elsewhere?
Thanks so much for your time.
Binny

Hi Binnie,
That's the same question I had, but I pulled the trigger and bought it anyway. I've owned three Onkyo receivers in the last 37 years and found it hard to stray to another brand. I should have it up and running this weekend. I'll keep you posted.

Re: To 616 or not to 616. That "IS" the question
Hi Binny,
Sorry for the delay. Started the setup late Sunday and finally got to tweak it yesterday. So far, so good. After I spent twenty minutes figuring out the remote, the rest went smoothly. We downloaded the latest firmware onto a dongle and it took an hour to upload to the receiver. My 17 year old Onkyo AV receiver was pretty much plug and play right out of the box and sounded great. The 616 is a lot more technical. The only thing I'm disappointed in is when I tried the 4k upscale, I got a blank screen. I have a 720p Pioneer plasma and it has a great picture, but I was hoping for more.
Feel free with any questions, Jim

Re: To 616 or not to 616. That "IS" the question
Thanks Jim,
My main concern is the "check SP wire" issue I have read about. It is typically followed by unit failure.
I hope you never experience it. I think I am gonna wait a bit before I leap. My paranoia runs deep.
Thanks again.
Vince

4K upscaling is only compatible for TV/ projectors able to display video in 4k resolution. Your current TV displaying in 720p is NOT sufficient to broadcast the video signal in 4k resolution. This is more a "FUTURE-tense" functionality for upcoming products that will support 4k resolution.
