Dolby Ex or Multichannel

Post  meteoro on Tue Oct 09, 2012 10:00 am

Hi,
I have some doubts for the audio settings. I have an Onkyo TX-NR509 with a 5.1 speaker set and the video is connected by HDMI IN and OUT for television.
When I put a movie in Dolby EX on the display show me a back surround speakers. These are for a set 7.1? I have a set 5.1 as I told you before. Should I use the multichannel instead of Dolby EX?
Dolby EX is the same that Dolby Digital?
What is the difference between Dolby EX or Multichannel?
What is the audio option convenient for me to use if I have a Set 5.1 and Iam watching a movie that has Dolby Digital or DTS?
And if I'm watching a. MKV with DTS?
Sorry for the many questions, hope you can helpo me
Thank you a lot.
Sebastian.

Hi Sebastian,

Dolby EX expands 5.1-channel sources for 6.1/7.1-channel playback. They’re especially suited to Dolby EX soundtracks that include a matrixencoded surround back channel. The additional channel adds an extra dimension and provides an enveloping surround sound experience, perfect for rotating and fly-by sound effects. If you are using HDMI there is no need to use the multi channel inputs on the back of the unit as the HDMI connection will provide all of the audio supported by the disc you are playing. Also With the supplied calibrated microphone,
Audyssey 2EQ® automatically determines the number of speakers connected, their size for purposes of bass management, optimum crossover frequencies to the subwoofer (if present), and distances from the primary
listening position. Audyssey 2EQ then removes the distortion caused by room acoustics by capturing room acoustical problems over the listening area in both the frequency and time domain. The result is clear, well-balanced sound for everyone.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the prompt reply!
About the multichannel I did not mean the connection of the back of the AV Onkyo. I refer about the Onkyo AV mode. When I put a movie, the display says multichannel, this is the correct mode for the movie and my set 5.1?
Witch is the correct mode for a movie Dolby Digital? Is this sets automatic depending the movie?
Thanks a lot.
Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

When you watch a movie our unit, (Onkyo) will pick up whatever the disc playing is encoded in, in most cases this would be Dolby Digital. If our unit is showiing Multi Channel you will want to check your BD or DVD players audio output menu and make sure that your unit is set to send out a bitstream signal as this will allow the Onkyo to do the decoding. From what you have mentioned it sounds to me that you will have to change the setting on your BD or DVD player. It might be easier if you call our Product Support Team at 800-229-1687 as they can try to troubleshoot with you. We are here from Monday to Sunday 24/7 to assist you.

Thanks,
