HT-R990 receiver problems (HT-S9400THX system)
Hello,
I have an HT-R990 receiver that came as part of an HT-S9400THX HTIB. It keeps giving me "Check SP Wire" errors.
I thought I'd give it a test-drive after I'd hooked up only the three front channels, and it shut down. Then I thought I'd just hook up left front and right front and use the FM tuner. The unit still shut down.
I'd think that the "check SP wire" would indicate a short. Does the protection circuitry also detect an open, that is, no speakers attached?
(I have seen the unit shut down once with no inputs and no speakers attached, per the troubleshooting tips, but this is not consistent.)
Thanks. I'd like to get this sorted out without a warranty repair and save us all time and money.

What gauge speaker wires are you using onto this receiver? You noted you have already done the AMP PROTECT MODE troubleshooting steps as mentioned by the owner's manual; but if this doesn't resolve the issue- this is a indication of an internal issue occurring inside the components of the receiver and will reuire further servicing and evaluation.

I am using the speaker wires that came with the system. They are pretty light gauge, maybe 24 AWG? When I do final speaker placement and hookup, I'll use 16 AWG.

PS Should I try hooking up all 7 speakers, or is that wasted effort at this point?

I would advise that since you already tried a 2.1, 3.1 and NO speakers connected and was still registering the CHECK SP WIRE message; you can try connecting a 5.1 speaker connection and disabling the SURR BACK speakers to determine if this resolves our issue. You may need to have your unit evaluated at an local authorized Onkyo service center to further determine what is occurring with this unit. You can also try using another pair of speaker wiring to determine if the issue could possibly be a short in those speaker wires as well. Hope this further assists you.

I will try that. Somehow, I don't think it'll help, but it's a worthwhile experiment. If that fails, I'll ship it off since there are no local repair shops.

I have measured the wires and confirmed that there are no shorts. (I'm an EE and know how to use a multimeter.)

How long have you owned this product? Do you have the original dated sales receipt? As the manufacturer's warranty is valid for 2 years from the original date of purchase; you can either contact the dealer for a product exchange if you are still within their exchange timeframe- or have the unit serviced at one of our authorized Onkyo service centers. We apologize for the inconvenience and issue you are experiencing with your new Onkyo unit and hope you experience no further servicing issues.

The unit is under warranty, but I bought it mail order. I have already the dealer, and they said to ship it to an Onkyo service center. I have all the necessary info; this was a last-ditch effort before shipping it off to see if I was doing something silly by not connecting all the speakers and expecting it to work.
