Playing music using DLNA Empty Playing music using DLNA

Post  jpdegroat Sun Dec 04, 2011 11:45 am

I have a 609 that is connected via ethernet to my home network. When trying to play music from my home computer using DLNA, it works fine at first. Sometimes several songs in a playlist will play and sometimes it will only get through one song. Then the receiver shows blank on the dlna screen as if it has disconnected. I have to go back to beginning of the Net screen and select DLNA, then my computer, etc. all over again. This is incredibly annoying as this was an important feature to me. Do you have any idea what causes this? The connection is rock solid as far as I can tell. The receiver has no problem connecting and I can see it on my network, but it just won't keep the connection why playing songs. thanks for any help.

Hi jpdegroat,
What type PC are you using to stream from? What are the files that you are trying to play back? Thanks!

Playing music using DLNA Empty Re: Playing music using DLNA

Post  jpdegroat Mon Dec 12, 2011 12:36 pm

Sorry. Never got notification that there was a reply. Just looked at the forum again. Regular PC running Windows 7 ultimate. The files are a mixture of .mp3 and .m4a. They are all 100% in Itunes and then I pulled them over into Windows Media Center so that they could be found through DLNA. There is no problem playing any of the songs individually. The problem is when you want it to keep playing from song to song. Then the music will stop all of a sudden after a song is completed. When you walk in and look at the screen, the Onkyo shows nothing. Like it doesn't even see the connection anymore. You have to back all the way out to the NET screen again and select DLNA, then the computer, etc. all over again.

Hi jpdegroat,
Thank you again for your patience, it's the busy season around here. We are going to ask you to perform a test, can you try moving some .mp3 files to a test folder and put the .m4a files in another test folder. Try each one(by itself) and see if it stops or continues to playing? After the test please let us know what was the outcome...Also, do you know what bit/sampling rate you're playing at? Thanks again!

Ok. Will do. Where would the bit/sampling rate be defined? On the files on the computer or on the Onkyo receiver. Sorry, not too familiar with the details in audio technology.

Playing music using DLNA Empty Re: Playing music using DLNA

Post  jpdegroat Fri Dec 23, 2011 4:27 pm

Found very interesting piece of information that may help solve the problem. I did run the tests you requested, twice in fact on both. I first created two lists, one with only mp3 and one with m4a. Each list had 6 songs of the particular file type. I ran through each list twice and got the same results every time. The interesting thing I found out is that the Onkyo ceases to connect at almost exactly 15 minutes every time. So he are exact results. Started playing list one. At a certain point in song 4, the Onkyo screen stops showing the song, album, play time, etc. as it normally does while playing and goes back to "DLNA" connection screen, showing no connection. Started playing list two. Again, at a certain point in song 4, the same thing happened. I only noticed the time factor after running the tests the second time. Since each of the songs are of different length, I went back and added up all the time. I even ran stop watch. Each time, the same thing happened at 15 minutes after starting the initial connection and song.

To me, this indicates that somewhere there is a timeout happening. I am hopefull you will know where that is. As to your other question on bit rate, I did look at each of the files. It varies for all of them but is in a range between 250 and 290 kbps depending on the file.

Thanks again. I am encouraged this will you all diagnose and solve the problem.

Playing music using DLNA Empty Same Problem

Post  mast76 Fri Dec 30, 2011 5:00 am

Hi,

I had the same problem. I hope I solved it, by connecting my DLNA Server with my Onkyo by a normal switch and not over my internet-router. Yesterday it plays the first time over 2 hours without interuppt.

Could be the IGMP protection in the router.

Greeting,
mast76

Thanks for the input mast. If I didn't have the exact same setup in my theater room using an LG BD player and marantz receiver, then the router might be a potential cause. It works no problem over the same router and internet setup as the Onkyo. It has to be something with that receiver as far as I can tell.

Yes, it is a problem with the receiver. The dlna function use muticast to stream the content. Because it needs a large bandwidth, some routers ask after a while if the multicast is needed anymore. The problem is, the the Onkyo didn't answer this question and so the router block the multicast because he think it isn't needet. As a workaround, you can use a switch to connect the dlna server with the onkyo. For me it works for a couple a days, but i hope, that onkyo patch the problem, because i don't want more devices than my router. Alternatively you can disable the block function in your router, but i could'nt find the option in my router.

Hope I could make it clear in my bad english ;-)

Hi jpdegroat,
Can you try playing a few local stations through Vtuner and see if they drop out? Thank you for your patience.

Local radio stations on Vtuner appear to be fine. I have been playing for a little over 30 minutes now without interruption.

Thank you. Any guess as to when the tech will be able to work on it? I am sure you have a lot on your plate, but I would like to get this resolved or find out that I have to return the receiver and get something different.

Are you going to be able to work on this or should I return the receiver? I really don't want to do that and I understand you all are busy, but I need to do something.
