TX-NR515/616 Video Upconversion - Pre-sales question
I see that the 515 and 616 feature "Analog To HDMI Upconversion" but I have read comments in some reviews that Composite video input to HDMI doesn't work and component input upconversion is not a feature of either device, according to the features list on the main website. So what is 'Analog To HDMI Upconversion' if you can't have composite input converted to HDMI and component video upconversion doesn't work?

These receivers will upconvert from Analog (480i video resolution) thru HDMI OUT to your television/ projector. The video source (VCR/ DVD/ game console) must have its video output setting reconfigured to 480i for it to be processed thru the receiver. Once this settings change has been made onto that source; you can use either a RCA COMPOSITE or COMPONENT VIDEO connection into the receiver and the input will be outputted through the HDMI cable.

Re: TX-NR515/616 Video Upconversion - Pre-sales question
So composite or component to HDMI will work as long as the source analog signal is at 480i (in USA composite was only ever 480i, as far as I remember).
Component video at higher resolution (like 720p or 1080i) will result in no signal from the analog source being sent through the HDMI output of the receiver?
What about when the source is good, composite or component at 480i, does the HDMI output get upscaled to the 1080p (assuming the monitor connected to the receiver's HDMI output is 1080p native)? Or is the HDMI output still at 480i?
Thanks

To answer your question; when the video source (COMPOSITE or COMPONENT) is set to 480i, when upscaled- it will be outputted to the maximum resolution setting supported by the TV/ Projector. So if your TV/ projector supports 1080p, it'll output at 1080p from 480i. If your TV supports up to 720p or 1080i, it'll be outputted at 720p or 1080i from the 480i incoming from the source device.

Re: TX-NR515/616 Video Upconversion - Pre-sales question
OK that makes sense then. That is what I was expecting, the features list just made it confusing with the way it seemed to contradict itself.
The 515 and 616 are looking very attractive, the only way they could be better would be to make them slightly less tall (like the Marantz 1403/1603 slimline models). I only feel that I should hold off until the recurring issue with HDCP output drop out is fixed with new firmware. It seems a lot of people are affected by it so I don't feel secure buying one until there is an official firmware fix.
Thanks.
